  1. I did notice it, was a lot more visible before the finishing. Cool thing about it is it goes right through the wood so its visible from the inside too.
  2. A few little odds and ends done this weekend. Needed some quick projects to feel like I was accomplishing something. Finally got round to making mallets for my brother and I. Handles started rectangular and were turned round on one side but keeping the flats on the other. Finished mallets with some BLO on them. Seeing the carvers mallets that mr pants made inspired me to finally make one. Head was fiddlewood and the handle I have no idea what it was! Also turned a pot for an orchid my wife was giving to her sister as a present. Was hollowed way too deep in relation to toolrest support and scary as heck to do. Literally was trying to catch every second or two in the deepest parts. Just used a stain/sealer combo to make it waterproof. Project for tonight is finishing this pen I did some rough turning on. Acrylic can be quite fun to turn but its super messy and this particular one is very brittle so light cuts and sharp tools needed.
  3. Yup it was pretty much the screen that sold it to me, also there is an ios specific game that my wife likes to play on it from time to time. I used to like android's flexibility but after a while it just turns into a mess. I prefer doing customisation on a pc and for mobile devices to just work.
  4. Im not a fan of anyone that is sponsored, at least wood whisperer is sponsored by powermatic which is good stuff. That Bosch saw he got is a *really* good saw though, been looking at it longingly for a while and at a 3rd of the price of festool its much better value.
  5. Diresta makes some cool stuff, I just get a little tired of his branding sometimes. I honestly never see an ad on youtube, it might be because of ublock though on my pc. My ipad still displays ads.
  6. Ah awesome, I love seeing stuff people have turned. Those little carvers mallets are particularly awesome, Im going to be turning one in the near future.
  7. Ooh I dont have one of those, thanks for the spotting. Going to get hold of them quick.
  8. A bit overkill that You forgot to mention that you also have a lathe you dont use
  9. I mostly buy from mr woodturner, they have by far the biggest variety. The downside to a lot of the kits is that you need bushings for it and also need some very randomly sized drill bits too. That can push the price up quite a bit. The drill bits are normally imperial conversions which is why they are strange sizes. Easiest ones are the euro or slimlines because they are just a single 7mm drill bit. The Jr gents I bought cost around R350 in drill bits and bushings before even buying a single kit. The upside though is that they are the cheapest lidded pens and they can really show off a good blank very nicely.
  10. The Toolmate stuff is identical to Mac Africa stuff, I have compared many tools to see that. The only real difference I can tell is that certain items can be better rated like bearings and bushings etc. Seems the "brand" can specify those details but the castings are all generic along with motors and other basics.
  11. For the money you pay some mac afric items are fantastic, like that little MC1218 lathe I have. With the lathe it was quite easy to figure out the value though, its a very generic model used by the likes of Rikon, Wen etc etc etc so easy to get information about. All of their products are just Chinese tools that are branded with their name, other companies that do this locally are Seppach, Toolmate and a few others. The benefit to getting something like that is quality is normally decent and spares are easy to find, even if its from another brand.
  12. Im not so sure about those mac afric ones, but then again the others might not be that great either. Main thing you want in a drill press is accuracy and any of them can suffer from run out/drift. You really need to check what its like in action to see if its going to be what you are after. The ones with higher speed ranges have super complex pulley systems so you end up not changing them often and drilling at the incorrect speeds. If you do check out the mac afric one then please post on here, I was looking at the same one recently and still in 2 minds about it.
  13. Very cool. I need to turn some more pens soon. Bought a few jr gent kits last week so those are next on my list of turnings.
  14. Oh wow! you dont need another son do you? That is something really special.
  15. Hey now, Im seeing one of those swivel head lathes in there, why dont I ever see you posting stuff you turned in here???
  16. Very nice, looks like you are getting a good collection of guitars you have made together. What did you use for finish?
  17. I turned a lidded box for my wife this weekend, it was from a yellow wood we had to cut down. Was a bit rough going to start because my toolrest couldnt fit underneat due to the size of it, took some creative roughing to get it down. Also had to use tiedowns to keep the lathe from walking off the cabinet because I haven't decided where I want to bolt it down yet. This pic isnt great, was taken late last night when I finished off. The ceramic succulent was made by my wife and makes a nice little knob. I used Chestnut microcrystalline wax as a finish, really great stuff that. The ipad was just for size comparison, its big!
  18. I think Im done with the lathe setup for now, finally got the chisel rack built. Now to turn handles for the last two tools and get back into some serious turning.
  19. man those are seriously awesome!
  20. Most of the water based poly's we get in SA seem to be for floor sealing so Im sure that is the right choice.
  21. Cryptocurriencies will still continue but the value is in the blockchain and not the currency. Once a commit has taken place to a blockchain then its there forever and cannot be manipulated, there is value in that.
  22. I feel that pain, I still actually need to build the home... We bought a subdivision about a year ago which had a 1 bedroom granny flat on it. So we moved in there and got the garage built but the house is still just at slab height. Still going to be a while until its done and then I will need to build every single cupboard including the kitchen to save on costs.
  23. My original plan was to make it a flip top so that the lathe would be able to sit upside down and provide an extra work surface but that meant I would lose the storage space which I needed quite desperately. The fliptop was going to match my tablesaw as an outfeed but that would also mean compromising lathe working height to match the table saw.
  24. I was originally going to mount it inside of cupboard because that is mostly space I dont know how to use at this point. The chuck and allen keys though I use constantly, I have a geared lathe and it needs tools to change speeds which can be a pain. One thing I do though is take a vacuum cleaner to the lathe every time I finish working on it. It might not look that way with all the shavings lying around but I took a break from planing board for the chisel holder to take the pics That Sorby toolrest though is the business, Im looking at getting the S shaped bowl rest and box scarper platform for it too.
  25. Done for now on the lathe cart, still need to use it for a while to see if there is anything I want to change on it. I added a holder for live centres, jacobs chuck etc. Decided against the handle on the left because it would be less practical than just hold the top to move it around. I will probably mount a multiplug there instead. I bought one of the Sorby modular toolrests to replace the piece of junk that came with the lathe, that thing felt like it was made from cheese because it would get big dings taken out every time I used a parting tool or a skew.
