  1. It stopped being about the kids at those parties a while ago. Now its a chance to impress the other mommies. My wife owns a cake shop and says that some of the 1st and 2nd birthday cakes are getting more expensive than wedding cakes! Seriously does a 1 or 2 year old even notice the cake? I think not, but the other mommies sure do!
  2. I like everything they are made of but dont like the actual skilpaaitjies strangely enough. Something just doesnt work for me.
  3. Thou shalt not question the skill of Bogus! Seriously though the man is part magician and part artist.
  4. Yes, it just takes a while for stuff to be dispatched but they are legit.
  5. With regards to the linseed oil, its exactly like Ed says, boiled being the most common because it has solvents to aid drying. The smell isnt super strong and fades fairly quickly. Just a word of warning, dont bunch up the paper towels/rags you use to apply it because they can catch fire in the bin, rather lay them out somewhere to dry first before throwing them away.
  6. Sorry man that was my bad, I forgot to put the link in that has the explanation video. Seeing as how its bees wax it smells quite nice, definitely no offensive smell anywhere.
  7. I used this process with the same ratios he does, was actually pretty quick and easy to do. I like boiled linseed oil as an easy to use finish that I think smells quite nice. My other go to finish is the same as the method for making the abrasive paste minus the abrasive, its just a beeswax/mineral oil finish. Super easy to apply and re-apply but looks and feels good. For what its worth mineral oil is sold as liquid paraffin at chemists, I just need to find a supplier of larger volumes for slightly better prices now!
  8. I dont know Wayne personally but my impressions are he is one of the most standup guys on the hub, take him up on his offer! When I was going through a really rough time and looking to move Wayne stuck his hand up and said he would be willing to help, to offer that to a complete stranger takes a very special kind of person. Im busy watching things unfold with my sister and her 1 month old baby at the moment, she is only 300km from where my mom lives but she has felt very alone and stranded from help despite her husband being a susperstar at doing whatever he can. We chatted quite a bit about it and i realized that its very tough to see through the haze that is sleep deprivation and having to *constantly* have our eye on your little one. Things will get better and life will start getting more fun again soon, its just rough getting through the earlier months. I still wonder why people often think Im crazy for not wanting kids
  9. I also had a bit of fun making up some East London grit hahaha. I found a clone type recipe for Yorkshire grit and made a batch, it works a charm. Made in a double boiler with Beeswax, mineral oil and super fine pumice powder. Next batch I will try getting some rottenstone to use as the abrasive for it. I sand to around 180 grit now and use this to take is up to around 600-800 grit.
  10. So around 2 weeks ago I noticed a branch had broken off of a neighbors tree and landed in another neighbors yard. He took exception to this and dumped it in the greenbelt across from us. I didnt pay much attention to it because the branch looked dead and had a rotten end. Then my wife needed a twig for a Halloween display she was doing in her shop so I popped over to cut one off and noticed the rest of the branch was still green... and covered in burls! Much excitement(and me chaining extension cords for my electric chainsaw) followed and I ended up with a couple decent pieces of wood. This is the first one I cut: Its not a particularly big piece being a branch, but is good for small natural edge bowls. Finished bowl: Its starting to crack and indent around the heavier burl but that is fine, I expected this piece to go a bit nuts and it was more form than function anyway. Its London plane tree with some burling that has been smashed by shot hole borer beetles which explains a lot of the Ambrosia type pattern in the heartwood area.
  11. Very nice!
  12. Joh chainrings facing the couch, you are a braver man than me!
  13. I never managed to get the hang of fps on a controller. It make me really angry most of the time when I tried. I was a pretty good fps gamer on pc and played in the high end of the DGL for many years so the console thing was never going to work.
  14. I have a 600GB cap with 2TB of accumulated bandwidth, my wife and her netflix gets close to the 600GB cap each month!
  15. Meh that sucks, I blame the amount of power you put through them for the cracks
  16. Great pics Gummi, looks properly mizzy out there.
  17. Delta HF integrale
  18. Yes it does, its a red liquid when its in the bottle but from my experience it always sinks in and dries clear. It apparently forms some crystal structure inside and then the job is done. Its pretty cheap too and available from most hardware stores, so I would get a small quantity and maybe test the underside of the counter first, but Im pretty sure it will do what you are looking for. I was checking their gallery and there are pics of marble floors they have used it on.
  19. Have you considered this? http://www.pctwaterrepellent.co.za/p/268974/pct-56-water-repellent- It was originally developed for the mining industry from what I understand and its pretty amazing stuff. I have treated quite a few different surfaces with it over the years and it does a great job.
  20. Yes and no, there is a lot of R&D that goes into carbon, different grades and layups in certain areas etc. The thing with big brands is normally consistency which isnt always the case with the unbranded stuff. There are some good reputable Chinese manufacturers though so its about doing research before buying.
  21. Thanks, I checked them out and they only seem to do a solvent based poly. they do have a water based deck sealer though but Im not sure how suitable that would be for interior type projects I do.
  22. I enjoy applying linseed oil, always nice to see the colours come back to life. Random question directed at anyone... do we get water based polyurethane in SA? I see its a very common finish in the states but cant find any locally manufactured stuff.
  23. That is the type of finish I would go for, its a bit high maintenance though for some. Woodoc have some good apply and forget for a year or two type finishes but I dont use any of their products so cant really recommend any. My general choice of finishes are normally waxes and oils/shellacs so I would be pretty useless recommending anything.
  24. Doing great work as always mr Turbo.
  25. This was the first attempt, same as the rectangular one its London Plane tree, rectangular one must have been heartwood though because this is more like the normal creamy colour of it. I forgot to take into account the mortice I was using to hold it on the chuck and turned right through the bottom of it. My wife suggested hot gluing a ceramic succulent she made into it. Its not the best result but it still looks quite cool. This little dude was an experiment with tiny logs and natural edge, was quite fun to do.
