  1. Man I am so disappointed. Came all the way from CT (with a new bike) to ride this, but Mother nature has other plans. Mountain bikers cry...., farmers smile. With all this rain, I am going to bale. Do not feel like a mud fest. Sorry GOC. Did the Al-2-Hez last year and loved it. Was so looking forward to this..... If weather permits, I will try again next year.
  2. Did the 50 miler. The conditions were great until just past halfway when a fresh southerly headwind wind picked up all the way home. Was a nice race, well organised with a good turnout. I managed 13th overall and 1st Vet in.
  3. Firstly, I loved the 60km race and the route. It will definitely be on my calendar for next year. The organisers did a sterling job, but I have to agree with Jaco. Once myself and another rider overshot a tight left-hander on a fast descent and on the last 15km the markings were a bit dodgy here and there. I suggest to put two white arrows on the ground, one well ahead of the turn. A Toyota Prado came past me and in the dust cloud I missed the turn. I rode for about 2km before realising I missed a turn. Oh and one last thing. There were spectators with a dog at a very technical section of the single track in the first 30km. As I was about the negotiate this piece, the dog started barking, causing a distraction and I went slightly off the racing line a took a rough tumble. The keep the peace I did not say anything in case it was the land owner but I think it is ridiculous to bring a barking dog to spectate at a technical section. However, still managed a 3:08.
  4. I'll be the one with Nissan socks ....
  5. I'll do the Tru Cape. 1) I have ridden Skyfall a few times and it is all its cracked up to be and more, but...!! Being a local race, it will have a ton of entrants with various skill levels in every batch. So unless you are in A batch, you stand a good chance of being held up by a less skilled rider spoiling the Skyfall experience. Skyfall has to be done in "anger" to experience it. 2) I have enough Nissan socks.
  6. I agree. Grabouw was not better with route changes at the last minute, if I am not mistaken. Only nice thing was the socks.
  7. She very rarely trained with Eric. She mostly did her own training according to her coach's instructions.
  8. Once I was taking pics just after a river crossing at the Attakwas, when Ari nearly rode over my phone which was right next to my leg. I was about 1.5m off the racing line. After the race I mentioned it to her, and she could not remember it. She did not even see me, let alone my phone. She zones out completely when racing. With regards to the dragging rotor, they had a +-50km hour tail wind back to the finish. So yes, if it dragged slightly, I can understand it.
  9. Agreed, Ari is a machine. Give the girl a break, don't speculated. Given that Ari has been beaten in a few races this year as well, by Robs and Jen. However, what is not public knowledge is that Ari had an accident not to long ago at Die Boord in Stellies, when a man opened his car door knocked her off her bike. She hurt her hip. Today there was hurt all over Ari's face coming through WP3. She had a limp at the finish. I have not spoken to her since the start of the Epic, but that injury could also play a part. Robs & Jen is on a different level than last year! They even drilled Ester and Sally's teams. The starting sequence for the ladies have also changed, which make for closer racing. At WP 1, Ascendis trailed by 1.30sec. At WP 3, they trailed 4.08sec. Robs and Jen pulled it back in a strong tail wind to take the win.
  10. I gave it horns on the Amarider already having respiratory issue. Next day did a ride with Waylon not dress warm enough. Picked up a terrible flu. Been down for 6 days, starting to feel better, but still coughing rubber. I'll ease into biking, luckily I have an indoor trainer. This flu going around is not a joke.
  11. I experienced an attempted bike-jacking last year March across from Beyerskloof. Conditions: 6H15 - dark - alone (got way no harm done) Since then I often ride to Franschoek down Brackenfell-Bottelary-Kromme Rhee-Helshoogte with no issue.
  12. I spoke to restaurant owner in the area. He says that they have loads of problems with the mischievous local farm youths. The have constant theft problem on the farm. They recently stole a 200 year old brass sundial which presumably have been sold as a scrap metal. He was not surprised at the problems with the route markers.
  13. Bought it in Bad Cannstadt, Stuttgart, Germany.
  14. If Ariane's did not have the fall and nursing this knee, the gap would have been even bigger........
  15. Brackenfell to Rooi Els & back. South Easter lived up to it reputation.
  16. We should have a beer after the race. The after party on Saturday is going to legend.
  17. Just confirmed. Ariane Kleinhans is not on the list, but she is riding as well.
  18. Looking forward to this one for the whole year. Group D for me, 70 x 2.
  19. Lots of Respect !!!!!!
  20. Seemed like the everyone enjoys themselves and its a race for the bucket list. From what I saw the organisation was superb. The celebs were friendly. However, the SPUR burgers were tasteless and unappetising. Ask Food Lovers to cater at the Finish rather.
  21. Yeti, down boy!!! Since I am not racing against Nino or Carl, I am quite happy with what was suggested to me and fitted by a Spez dealer. I prefer SRAM over Shimano. Money is no object, so if these one's don't last I'll replace them with something else. Thanx for your 2 cents.
  22. I just upgraded my Epic's Formula brakes with new SRAM XO Trail brakes. What a difference!!! They are amazing. Hell, if I don't wear glass my eyes will pop out. Apart from the Epic's standard Formula's brakes seals going twice during the Warranty period, stopping my 91kg's downhill became to much for them to handle. (The Formula used 180mm rotors in front) It did not do my nerves any good either. The new SRAM Trail brakes utilises 4 pod callipers and 160mm rotors from and rear. This is no Scientific test, but going downhill at 22km per hour on a 6% decline it stopped me within 2.5m. Great job SRAM!!
  23. I bought an brand new Epic and had problems with a Shimano derailer on my first race. I change the derailer and shifters to Sram XO. Best thing I could do. I have done a number of very muddy races and never had any issues. I don't want to hijack this thread, but what is the good to best brakes to fit. I am 91kg and the current brakes (Magura MTS) struggle a bit.
  24. Jip, summer is on it way. This was confirmed by the 3 bugs I ate on the weekend ride varying in size, impact and taste .
