  1. Raleigh and Giant has excellent entry level bikes. Raleigh Ridge is listed on their website for under 4K, but I'd spend the extra R600 for the disc brakes.
  2. What I got from the show was that Barloworld was in it for the return, they have maxed their return and extended their strategy from 5 to 7 years in the sport. While the spin offs exceeded their expectations, they couldn't let sentimental or emotional reasoning cloud the business decision. Lets hope that another SA team is willing to go this route and I was impressed with Barloworld for the open invitation for other teams to chat to them about the process of becoming a successful pro continental team.
  3. Where chops come from? No seriasly. I've been going to Epic Bike Shop for years, love the new shop! And those Morewoods had me revisiting my wedding budget a few times. Who needs flowers, music and a honeymoon anyway?
  4. The bike shops with good reputations seem to have a few things in common: 1. They are typically smaller shops 2. They build a relationship with the customer 3. The owner is actively involved in the shop If you have built up a good relationship with the shop, and something is not satisfactory, you would be more inclined to take it up with the owner and talk it out, instead of washing your dirty laundry on the hub. There will always be a place for the "Hypermarket" type cycling shops that carry all the major brands and offers a cheaper product, but you will also get a conveyerbelt type mentality when it comes to servicing your pride and joy and the sales experience. I support a small shop that is not the cheapest, they are booked up weeks in advance for services and they have 3 or 4 brands, but they don't make mistakes on my bike and won't replace anything if it is not required. On occasions I'd get a bee in my bonnet about something I want for my bike and instead of just selling it to me, they'd give me the correct advice on if it is something that would enhance my riding experience. You can't take your Ferrari to Toyota for a service and expect them to apply the same care that you'd get at Viglietti.
  7. Hmmmm. service my old ones, buy myself new ones and upgrade her deore shifters with "hardly used, just been serviced" XT shifters.... I like the way you think.
  8. Thanks Johan Will give it a bash. New shifters is about 1k and I would like to rather spend the money on something nice for the missus. Sure way to score browniepoints!
  9. I have been using my Shimano XT Rapidfire shifters for 2 years now without hassle, but lately I am struggling with the front dereullieur shifting. When shifting up to a bigger chainring, the shifter gets "stuck" and I have to use my fingers to move it back into position. This is causing "miss fires" and is starting to affect my riding. I suspect that the shifters simply need a good clean and a service, as I changed cables recently and the problem still persists. Is the shifter something that I can try to service myself? I service most of the smaller items on my bike myself, but is worried that once I opened up the shifter, I'm not going to be able to get it back together. Furthermore I want to know if there are any parts in the shifters that needs to be lubed, or does the unit run "dry"? All you techies out there, please help
  10. I had delamination issues with my Crossmark / Stans Combo as well before. Usually after about 6 months / 2000 kms. Tyres were more than 50% worn on the 3 occasions that this occured. I switched to GEAX, which is cheaper, lighter and seems to be more durable as well.
  11. Any clip-on solution will scratch your car, and any bike rack where your bike "hangs" off the back will over time compromise the frame (welding if aluminium, and the carbon, itself if you have a carbon bike). So if you have an inexpensive bike and a car that you don't mind getting scratched, use a bike rack where your bike "hangs" from the back. If you have a bike and a car that you want to keep in working order for as long as possible, spend a bit of money and either get the thule pro-ride 591 that mounts on top of your car on roof racks, or get a tow bar and buy the euro classic 908 or similar.

  13. This makes my stomach turn. Do these events not have proper procedure manuals? This looks like gross neglegance.
  14. http://www.2oceansvibe.com/2009/09/16/prawns-encourage-kids-to-shoot-traffic-lights/comment-page-1/#comment-9419 I will not be supporting any of the businesses that associate themselves with this sort of generalisations and intolerance towards cyclists. Vote with your wallets, I say.
  15. too much handbag slinging on this post. later dudes.
  16. go to his website. There is a "contact us" box where you can send your comments. maybe mention to him that if you send mail from your work email address, someones bound to notice and may even go to the papers with it. Not the type of exposure cradletrout.com is looking for...
  17. When I saw that the start of the 70km ride was 8:30 and the cut-off was 13:30, I decided not to do the event. The message was clear from the orginisers / PPA, come if you want to race, we don't want you here if you are an average cyclist that want to improve your (already complicated) seeding. I knew that 5 hours would be pushing it to complete the ride, and I was not going to drive 300 km there and back for the 40 km ride.
  18. Sure, but don't they check the info before putting it on the web? How can I trust a calc if they can't even upload a results database properly?
  19. 2009/08/01Die Burger Bergfietsuitdaging (voorheen Stellenbosch Bergfietsuitdaging)6000:01:0004:18:4113.923433.0798 another "special" effort at Die Burger ride. Another 1hr winning time. This time the winner averaged 60km/h. wow! I must be doing something wrong. My ave is about 14km/h!
  20. 2009/07/04Pick n Pay/Weekend Argus/Rotary Knysna MTB Challenge5000:01:0002:42:5018.42057.34804 I wonder how they got to a winning time of 1 hr. Was the guy on a BMW GS or is there something wrong here? fastest mtb race ever... averaging 50km/h.
  21. Does anyone know if the XC trail will be open to the public soon?
