  1. Let's hope WindGURU isn't accurate: http://www.windguru.cz/int/?sc=91

    Argus 2014

    It's on this page: http://www.cycletour.co.za/index.php/route/split-time-calculator/
  4. I think everyone needs to calm down, pray for good weather, no crashes and just ride their bikes on the 9th.
  5. Glad to hear you are OK. Preventing these sorts of incidents and crime in general is what the City of Cape Town should be spending their money on. Not updating their logo... http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/western-cape/new-logo-city-of-cape-town-s-pride-1.1651685#.UwxYwPmSx5I
  6. 1,134m for the Rollercoaster on my Garmin Edge 500. Looks like it'll be windy on Sunday (just like the Rollercoaster): http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=91&sty=m_spot
  7. I've entered; don't see how it can be any less safe than doing a training ride by yourself/with friends. It's a pity the route is pretty much the same as the Rollercoaster. Anyway, less complaining; more riding!
  8. A few gems from this post on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/99erCycleTourAndMtbChallenge/posts/631380486909817 "I did not sign up for a 2km gravel road on my Cervelo road bike" "If I had to have fallen off my bike my training would have suffered intensely" "After endangering cyclists lives over a 2km gravel road you give a key ring as a medal - PATHETIC!" "My bike has been chipped due to the gravel road"

    99er crash out

This is hilarious: https://www.facebook.com/99erCycleTourAndMtbChallenge/posts/631380486909817 "I did not sign up for a 2km gravel road on my Cervelo road bike" "If I had to have fallen off my bike my training would have suffered intensely" "My bike has been chipped due to the gravel road"

    99er crash out

I think common sense is/was required in situations like these. If you feel out of your depth when facing an obstacle/challenging section, just back off a bit and do it in your own time and space. I was riding with a group containing a few C's, but mostly D and a few E's that had caught up by that point. On the section of the gravel road, before the water point, everyone started raising their hands and shouting to the other cyclists to slow down as there was a huge bunch of people who had fallen over (not crashed). They were slow speed wipe outs due to rider error. No one was hurt, aside from bruised egos. I simply (slowly) made my way through the pileup and made my way to the end of the gravel road without any incidents. Then I had a bit of catching up to do back on the tar, but it was fine and I still managed to finish in the top half of my starting group (D). Having done a lot of mountain biking (which obviously helps with bike handling skills), it really is a case of treating "obstacles" with respect. I do agree that some more warning could've been provided (for less experienced riders), but I don't think any one taking part in yesterday's race wasn't aware that there was a gravel road that you would have to contend with. Maybe at registration (number collection), an additional printout with exactly what distance the gravel road was at in the route and a few tips (as suggested previously), may have helped. At the end of the day, it is a race (fun ride) and you need to take responsibility for your own actions.
  11. No one died. https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/136063-99er-crash-out/#entry2208494
  12. That was fun (but tough). 2 nasty crashes in D (way before the dirt road) and another few down on the dirt made for a messy race. The end was brutal. That hill to the finish in the last km felt like a mountain! Great organisation (from before the start to the finish) - setting an example for the other races.
  13. Thanks for the feedback/warning. Based on how long it's taking to get seeding for the race, repairing/grading that dirt road by Saturday morning seems unlikely...
  14. I queried it on their Facebook page this afternoon. They said they'd get back to me soon. Needless to say I'm still waiting...
  15. What a great response!
  16. Interesting! I'll bet it was before Kommetjie... there was a guy from 'M' riding with us (first half of 'H') just after Kommetjie/Slangkop Road. Up until that point, I think I may have seen one or two 'I' riders, but that was it. Quite easy to take the Slangkop turn-off instead of going straight. Especially with yesterday's lack of marshalling.
  17. That is terrible. I find that is always the case at those robots with these "Cape Peninsula" events. And that main stretch through Fish Hoek is notorious. Mindless pedestrians, incompetent motorists...
  18. Sucks to hear of any accident related to cycling. But even more so when taking part in a paid for (expensive?) event where non-participants (motorists) are involved in (cause) the accident. Hope everyone is alright...
  19. It's the first "race" in the Southern Suburbs I've done since 2011. And you're right, the attitude of motorists was actually very different compared to that in Stellenbosch/Wellington/Durbanville, etc.
  20. What group were you riding in? Here are the contact details for the Pedal Power Association: http://www.pedalpower.org.za/index.php/contact-us/
  21. Things you don't want to hear from the announcer as your group is about to start: "There isn't road closures. It's a dangerous route. Obey the rules!" Yeah, and what about the ******** motorists who can't wait 30 seconds for a safe opportunity to overtake a small group of cyclists partaking in a race on a Sunday morning? The attitude of most motorists seriously stinks. Since when is overtaking a right? You're supposed to wait until it is safe to do so. As for the adrenaline junkies on their "super" bikes who think it's cool to come flying past cyclists really close. So sad... It's a great ride/route. But I totally agree re: safety. The Pedal Power Association seriously needs to do something about it in an event like this. There were cars flying up and down Ou Kaapse Weg, hooting and driving insanely close to the riders (front of group H). Intersections with traffic lights weren't marshaled (even though there were marshals nearby), so you pretty much had to stop and wait to make sure it was safe to cross. They could do with employing fewer people who stand around near the start groups (as if you need marshals there?) There's nothing wrong with not having a full road closure, but what about bike marshals riding with the groups? It felt like a free-for-all out there. I cannot see how the R160 entry fee is justified. To think Bay City Cycle tour in a few weeks time is only R90 (for PPA members). Going to email them re: the safety as it was unacceptable.
  22. I really like the Forerunner 210 which I recently bought and use exclusively for running. I use an Edge 500 for cycling.
  23. It wasn't that difficult to enter online. Looking forward to Sunday, wind and all.
  24. 38~47 km/h according to WindGURU at Cape Point on Sunday. http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=128493&sty=m_spot
  25. HT = Hardtail (i.e. no rear shock) FS = Full suspension (aka dual suspension) XX1 = SRAM 1 x 11 (1 chainring up front, 11 gears at the back)
