  1. I like that it has the vo2 max, race predictor and assists with rest duration, hence the more focused running. But also the watch will be everyday use, which is why the va3 comes into play
  2. Hello all, first off, good luck to those heading off for Amsterdam, I hope you SMASH it! So, I need help. I am going to be purchasing a new running watch but having difficulty choosing one. I have narrowed it down to the Garmin Forerunner 235 and the Vivoactive 3. These are both at the end of my budget and I can't increase it. The 235 is from what i can see, very runner focused and has good running features. The VA3 also has running features, but expands to more Smartphone capabilities and others (like golf, which I do play). the draw back is its not as runner focused like the 235. any opinions? i need to purchase next week and cant make up my mind.
  3. Really appreciate all the suggestions guys. The Suunto Spartan Trainer and the Garmin Forerunner 235 are currently leading in my mind. Need to do a bit more research...
  4. thanks @dave303e, I think I do need to elaborate that this watch will be strictly used for running and connecting to my smartphone.
  5. So after more deliberation, I have decided to scrap the Apple watch idea and have set my sights on a more specialized basis. I have heard that the Garmin 235 is quite a good watch for running? any advice or experience on the watch that you can give me? Alternatively, what other watch should I be considering around the 4k-5k price point?
  6. Well done to all that took part in races this weekend! I had quite a lekker long weekend training and managed to run twice, so was very happy. This running bug has hit proper hard. My birthday is next month. I may or may not be ordering a newish GPS/HR watch (Garmin 235 comes to mind) and shall be getting a decent pair of shoes (currently between Asics GT-1000 and Brooks, cant remember the model)
  7. I will take that into account. Thanks again for all your help. This information is golden.
  8. Thanks guys. I just feel as if sometimes my pace is a bit on the slow side
  9. When you say racing a 15km, 7:00m p/km counts right?
  10. Absolutely. I was never much of a cyclist so I have no former experience with cycling (that bug never really bit me). but running has, and hard. for now, its all about getting out there and doing some running. Small distances for now. Will increase carefully. Thats why my first half marathon is in January, giving me 3/4 months of preperations. Done a few 10kms before and 2 15km. have a 15km planned for the 31st of october (night race)
  11. Yes. I want to finish a 21km and take it from there. I appreciate your advice. Thank you
  12. I see what you mean. Thank you. I am busy running about 3/4 times a week now, albeit small distances, I am doing it. My idea is to start this program in November so I should have that 25km weekly base by then. Thanks for the help????
  13. Also, what is your review on the apple watch series 3 with regards to running? I currently have a Tom Tom runner (one off the first series, no heart rate (without the strap)) and looking to get a better watch. I don't have the finances to fork out R4k+ on a Suunto Spartan on anything like that. The apple watch would come through the Vitality benefit.
  14. So I have identified the Johnson Crane (Jan '19) as a possibility for my first half marathon. i would just like a bit of input with regards to the training i would need to do. i have found this training plan here: https://www.runnersworld.co.za/training/12-week-half-marathon-plan-beginners/ What are your thoughts? What I find very confusing is that they state "This beginner plan is for those who are consistently running 25 to 30 kilometres a week, with a long run of at least 10km" yet the first 3 weeks don't even breach 20km?
  15. So a follow up from my last post. I decided to have a run on Tuesday and Today. Did about 4km per run and I felt good. I am planning another run on Saturday (either parkrun or my own) Will Target 5km per run next week and take it from there. The new shoes are actually doing just fine, comfy and light, so happiness there. Just glad to be back and starting small. Might be doing a 15km race in November so my excitement is elevated
  16. Absolutely, my pair cost R400 so I am quite happy.
  17. This weekends achievement by Kipchoge has got me absolutely fired up! I bought a new pair of running shoes on Saturday and so badly wanted to have my first run in them on Sunday afternoon (alas, assignments due today were restrictive). But building my base starts this week! I'm going to start with morning runs on Tuesday and Thursday with a weekend run on either Saturday or Sunday. Done some research/reading over the weekend and going to start small. targeting 10 to 15 km per week and following the 10%/20% rule. I got a pair of Maxed running shoes (fit is good, quite light, colours are cool). I know they not the best, but I spoke to a number of people who said they will be fine do the distances I am covering. Will be buying a decent pair (Brooks, New Balance etc) in about November/December. Can't believe what a new pair of shoes does in terms of motivation.
  18. You find shoes okay? If so, from where?
  19. Thanks very very much for the info![emoji4] really appreciate the knowledge shared. They are indeed flippers! So I struggle with some brands in terms of stock. I have done an analysis of my running and have been told I probate with running, so I need some what of a stability shoe. Will shop around.
  20. Hi Barry. I am between an 11 and a 13 dependant on make. And to all others, thanks for the feedback. Any suggested sources I can look out for, for research?
  21. Howzit all, hope you all are good! wow its been a while since I've been on here. But, glad to be back nonetheless. I injured myself a bit in April (pulled hamstring badly, slight tear) as I was building up to my first 21km race. So i was out for 6 weeks. by then, it was winter and I just didn't bother anymore. However, it is time I start over again, but this time I want to do it properly, without injuries (if I can help it). My current base is practically non-existent, other than Parkrun on a Saturday ( I manage a time of 30:00 on average). Please help me? I need some tips in building a solid training plan/foundation/routine to get back into running, but I need your expert advice as I do not want to injure myself again. I would greatly appreciate any help. also, I need a "good enough for me" pair of new running shoes. However, current finances do not allow for me to be spending thousands. Suggestions? Thanks guys. hopefully this time I stick around for much longer...
  22. Hi guys, with the colder weather starting to set in, I notice that I struggle a lot more with cramps, predominantly in the hamstrings. Anyone got any advice to help with the cramps? And its not only when I run. It could be just a normal day at work but the cold will set off cramps. thanks
