  1. Gooday all, Firstly congrats to all OMTOM finishers this weekend. Good job . I wanted to reach out and ask if anyone here has ever returned to running following a herniated disk? I was recently diagnosed with a central/spinal canal herniation, but thankfully the neuro does not want to operate. I am taking his advise of 6 months rest (swimming in the meantime to maintain some fitness) but would like some advice as to how to return to running? I am looking starting very small again. Basically my first run will be 3km at 07:00/km and take it from there? Any other thoughts and/or advice? Much appreciated
  2. Thanks very much. Haven't run this week unfortunately due to work commitments but going out for a run or 2 this weekend. I did do some foam rolling which helped, nothing with too much pressure. and thanks! BNAC has always been our 'home' club growing up with my brothers playing football there and myself with other sports. But what do you mean by virtual clubs?
  3. Thanks Frosty. Much appreciated [emoji1303]
  4. Thanks Hacc, I look forward to being apart of the club. And thanks for the tip on foam rolling, I know it hurts[emoji23][emoji1303]
  5. So this past weekend I completed my first ever Half Marathon at Johnson Crane! Came in with a time of 2:32. I was aiming for 2:30 so not at all disappointed, and being my first Half Marathon, I just wanted to finish! I will train better and start improving. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, as it was my first ever 'big race' vs other 10km and 15km races I've done. Will there be more? Abso-frikken-lutely! Already planning Robor Schaffolding or Wally Hayward as my next 21km. One thing I was not expecting is the stiffness of the muscles the day after but epsom salts baths are helping a lot. Would adding in some foam rolling help or make matters worse? I did this run without being apart of a club. But will be joining Benoni Northens AC this Wednesday
  6. Thank you. Any dietary advice to make sure it doesn't happen?
  7. Well done to all the guys that did soweto marathon and kaapsehoop [emoji106] fantastic results Im busy training for my first half and did a 10km night run last week for some gauging and fun. 5km in was doing fantastic and really impressed with my pace. I was then hit with the worst stomach cramps and nearly didn't make the finish. Was forced to walk the last 4km. Any idea why? And how do I make sure it doesn't happen again. Thanks guys
  8. Thanks very much. I am sold on the 235
  9. This is honestly the best side by side comparison I have read on the internet, thanks! I think I am sold on the 235. Better for running, with great connecting to the watch (which is more than what I have right now) also has better functionality for runners (rest times, race predictor etc) I was looking at the VA3 for better cellphone connectivity but you struck a cord with me, that is interrupting your life with app notifications. Calls are fine. don't want more than that. Garmin Pay doesn't interest me, and I don't bank with FNB in anycase. I don't play enough golf and other sports to warrant the mulitsport functionality. thanks again. shall be getting my new watch most likely next week also getting a new pair of running shoes It's like christmas
  10. I like that it has the vo2 max, race predictor and assists with rest duration, hence the more focused running. But also the watch will be everyday use, which is why the va3 comes into play
  11. Hello all, first off, good luck to those heading off for Amsterdam, I hope you SMASH it! So, I need help. I am going to be purchasing a new running watch but having difficulty choosing one. I have narrowed it down to the Garmin Forerunner 235 and the Vivoactive 3. These are both at the end of my budget and I can't increase it. The 235 is from what i can see, very runner focused and has good running features. The VA3 also has running features, but expands to more Smartphone capabilities and others (like golf, which I do play). the draw back is its not as runner focused like the 235. any opinions? i need to purchase next week and cant make up my mind.
  12. Really appreciate all the suggestions guys. The Suunto Spartan Trainer and the Garmin Forerunner 235 are currently leading in my mind. Need to do a bit more research...
  13. thanks @dave303e, I think I do need to elaborate that this watch will be strictly used for running and connecting to my smartphone.
  14. So after more deliberation, I have decided to scrap the Apple watch idea and have set my sights on a more specialized basis. I have heard that the Garmin 235 is quite a good watch for running? any advice or experience on the watch that you can give me? Alternatively, what other watch should I be considering around the 4k-5k price point?
  15. Well done to all that took part in races this weekend! I had quite a lekker long weekend training and managed to run twice, so was very happy. This running bug has hit proper hard. My birthday is next month. I may or may not be ordering a newish GPS/HR watch (Garmin 235 comes to mind) and shall be getting a decent pair of shoes (currently between Asics GT-1000 and Brooks, cant remember the model)
  16. I will take that into account. Thanks again for all your help. This information is golden.
  17. Thanks guys. I just feel as if sometimes my pace is a bit on the slow side
  18. When you say racing a 15km, 7:00m p/km counts right?
  19. Absolutely. I was never much of a cyclist so I have no former experience with cycling (that bug never really bit me). but running has, and hard. for now, its all about getting out there and doing some running. Small distances for now. Will increase carefully. Thats why my first half marathon is in January, giving me 3/4 months of preperations. Done a few 10kms before and 2 15km. have a 15km planned for the 31st of october (night race)
  20. Yes. I want to finish a 21km and take it from there. I appreciate your advice. Thank you
  21. I see what you mean. Thank you. I am busy running about 3/4 times a week now, albeit small distances, I am doing it. My idea is to start this program in November so I should have that 25km weekly base by then. Thanks for the help????
  22. Also, what is your review on the apple watch series 3 with regards to running? I currently have a Tom Tom runner (one off the first series, no heart rate (without the strap)) and looking to get a better watch. I don't have the finances to fork out R4k+ on a Suunto Spartan on anything like that. The apple watch would come through the Vitality benefit.
