  1. Never had the fortune to see a live rocket launch as yet, it must be awesome although I have visited KSC. Probably the best must have been the behemoth that was the Saturn 5, and example of which is on display there. I used to tune into Voice of America on shortwave radio to listen to later launches in the '70's And I followed just about every Shuttle mission as closely as possible as well, its become a bit easier with the Internet rather than cranky old valve radio. In my post grad studies on and in the History of Science & Tech, I did quite a lot of work on the early rocket days, the story of the Werner von Braun and the rocket boys. If you are ever in London go take a look at the original V2 they have there, and compare that to the early rockets used to launch American men into space (many examples around the US, some at KSC).
  2. So who owned Luxair? Was it not Trek (assets and operation) in disguise? If so, it was probably the least of the sanctions busting scams at the time.
  3. Yes I read that it looses quite a few knots when letting of a few rounds of that 50mm. Its extremely agile, not very fast and literally bullet proof with multiple redundant systems. Pilot sits in a titanium bucket. Never been exported because its so unique and valuable,
  4. Big in the Vietnam War as well, close air support Which being me onto this magnificent flying machine that refuses to go down or become redundant, the A10 Warthog
  5. I'll probably loose - I generally can tell from side profiles of cockpits, winglets, landing gear I see SAA has that long A340 on the Cape Town run - it's just flown overhead., Full of cyclists no doubt.
  6. I went to my first Disco in Kempton - flashing coloured panels on the floor and all.
  7. I am sure they were always 03, I got it wrong, 03R is newer, Tower used to be on apron, some of the old pics reveal that, now its between the runways just north of that old one used by Atlas back in the day.
  8. Yes that caught me out as well - check out Atlaas and you will see one of the old 1Time fleet there, some on top of others. Turn off 3D in settings and you will get a regular image (and the 1Time fleet disapears)
  9. Still some Cargo MD-11's around, sure I have spotted some here recently. I flew internally in the USA once on DC-10 .. I generally sit at the back of aircraft and remember seeing the whole fuselage twisting and contorting under the thrust of that rear engine, not wildly but noticeable to my beady eye
  10. that old diagonal runway can be clearly seen on Google Earth (open in Chrome) Ends up now in that newish International terminal island
  11. I am sure you will remember as well that the aircraft to and from Atlas used to use a shorter diagonal runway, its the link / taxiway now between 03L and 03R now, don't think its an active runway anymore
  12. Sure - it was fun trolling the Interweb for BOAC and Jan Smuts last night I've flown BA a few times, not really my cup of tea, Virgin neither. Sadly I am of the age to remember when there was just one terminal at Jan Smuts. My dad used to fly to Europe on business trips a lot, and it was always exciting to see him off and meet him when he came back. He flew the BOAC VC-10 a few times. I think its a beautiful aircraft, flawed as it was.
  13. I think Luxavia took over a lot of SAA 747-SP's - flew many times in the 80's and early 90's - cheaper than SAA It was one class arrangement BUT if you were in the know you could sit upstairs for an extra R70 First time I flew with them was on an old SAA 707 - that was my 707 experience. Stopped at least twice for fuel to get to Luxemburg Exactly how they ended up with the SAA stock I can't say but because they were Luxembourg registered they could fly over Africa and not around the bulge like SAA had to do
  14. Not the MD-80 "The Boeing 717 is a twin-engine, single-aisle jet airliner, developed for the 100-seat market. The airliner was designed and originally marketed by McDonnell Douglas as the MD-95, a derivative of the DC-9 family. Capable of seating up to 134 passengers, the 717 has a design range of 2,060 nautical miles (3,820 km). It is powered by two Rolls-Royce BR715 turbofan engines mounted at the rear of the fuselage." I flew on the 1Times MD-80's a lot commuting to CT - loved the experience, esp. at the back where you could see / hear / feel those jet engines. Edit: Oops sorry i see the correction has be made already
  15. LWB there used to be a Constellation (or Super Constellation) parked in the back of the Technical areas where you give the engines a good blow, it is still there?
  16. 717 wtf ... where did that see the light of day. Besides that its just the 777 that I haven't flown in.
  17. That's when it came out for high altitude tests in 1973 ... in fact I saw that one land from that very spot, the viewing platform on the old (then new) International Terminal. Futher fact: I cycled 30 k's there, as a lightie does, to see the action. That is looking to the south east south.
  18. Lovely lines but ... http://i.imgur.com/u9xOQoC.jpg 1953
  19. Honestly I don't get it .. let the past be the past ,,,, Salsbury http://www.vc10.net/Memories/Images/G-ASGB_Salisbury_Rhodesia.jpg FAJS http://www.vc10.net/Memories/Images/G-ASGB_JNB_troptrials1965.jpg http://www.vc10.net/Memories/Images/VB_overhead_Joburg.jpg Joburg back in the day, 1963 lol - overhead Hillbrow Maybe its about the backward looking epidemic that led to Brexit
  20. I think the best result DD got in the UAE tour was Reinardt's 5th in the stage 5 sprint http://cdn.media.cyclingnews.com/2019/02/28/1/dar_6912_670.jpg If they are waiting for Cav to find his legs or whatever is missing, it might be futile endeavor ... but hey could be wrong. And there was some serious sprinting there with all the top guns, chuffed Sam Bennet took the last one (in the RHS of the pic). Bummer he not on their Giro list.
  21. Yes, that was in training with the BirdMan. I took to it quite easily, really loved the sensations.
  22. Sam Chui chucked in his chirps of the subject Sam is an investement banker in Dubai with a lot of disposable income which he spends checking out the sharper ends of commercial flights around the world - certainly an Av Fan, not so technical though, but I enjoy his channel because he covers a lot.
  23. Paragliding ... is a great form flying. Did some during my time in CT would love to pick it up here on the Highveld http://www.entopia.org.za/Gallery/Meerendal_MidJan2006/Gone-m.jpg
