  1. As LWB, says one advantage to the higher bypass ration engines is that they are much quieter, the chevrons on the tail end of the nacelle that you find on some engines like on the Dreamliner and 747-800, 737 Max make it even quieter These jet engines are a constantly evolving technology and materials science plays big part, even deeper in the engine, including the hot section, new materials and composites are being used (like composite ceramics) - even just a few % in fuel savings means a lot to airlines.
  2. Just for some additional perspective I see there are still quite a few -100's in service elsewhere in the world, one unique feature it has (optional) is a protrusion in the front of the engine intake that blows dust away on landing. Those reverse thrust umbrellas are always a good laugh, but they have stood the test of time.
  3. Creosote is one option = pongs for a while but settles down
  4. Compare the 737 Max to the ole -100 fluffy Still in service with Air Zim apparently
  5. from what i understand the evolution of high bypass engines has been driven by efficiency, meaning its much more efficient to have a gas turbine turning a big ducted fan, previously most of the air sucked in went into the compressor, injected with fuel and set alight. Also the evolution of materials for this composite fan blades has been enabling. The issue has been the size of the engines, they have had to move them, forward and up so they can clear the ground, like in the latest 737 Max The tendency is toward bigger (increase bypasss) engines - the latest is the hooj GE9x they are getting ready for the 777x -seen here on a 747 test bed
  6. Roku is a good option if you are not tied into the Apple ecosystem
  7. One thing I couldn't see was that if the national teams were racing as a team. In the men's it was a bit more obvious with one main man: with Haas Daas kinda blocking when Mat went but with the ladies is seemed a bit of a fee for all, with Denise stringing out the leading pack earlier and not doing anyone any favours, and no one really watching / tagging / marking the only dangerous Belgian upfront who got away unhindered. Or did I miss something? Too bad Lucinda had such bad luck & foutjies - was it 3x she went down? but came back each time. She was player of the match imho. http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/brand-forgives-father-for-accidental-bike-change-crash-at-worlds/
  8. Even though Tool 'slipped up' on Silver ... Those guys went full gas 100% of the time. As Yolanda says, there is no respite with 'cross.
  9. https://youtu.be/COMv0t-KC1g Cant rode a brilliant calculated race - and had min foutjies, minner that the mob of Nederlandse that she was up against.

  11. If you haven't discovered the Tachibana Orange Devils on utoob ....where have you been? https://youtu.be/Fh40gQMyFXk
  12. Toon might do some damage, he gave Mat a hard time this last weekend... Wout .. ek weet nie. Yes ladies is very open, although I'm rooting for mama Denise, she seems to have peaked but could make the podium But Lucinda has been dropping everyone lately and winning in style. Ms Vos has also been strong and up front most of the time, but has shown to be beatable. but who knows, it could be a Katie day at last. The course in Denmark is quite different from what that have been used to in Belgium lately, apparently they are expecting sub zero temps and wind.
  13. Worlds this weekend in Denmark - any predictions?
  14. Even the big birds have a visual preflight by the FO who has to step down to the tarmac and walk around and do the same drill you had to do on the C152 you learnt to fly on. Its really the first thing you learn about flying. Problem quite possibly here is COMPLACENCY Having said that, any landing you can walk away from was a good one
  15. sad day when you quoting yourself Anyone have one of these gizmo's? yet to see one here on the shelves, let alone blades or accessories. Its the sort of tool that's going to help out is certain situations where no other tools (even hand tools) will do the job. according to youtube that is
  16. No its the carriers / couriers,, most wont ship Lithium Ion
  17. Most of the Makita tools one buys are tools only - so start off with drill kit that comes with a charger and a battery or two, they just buy tools. BPM Toolcraft had a good deal on a kit and also very reasonable prices on batteries, you will have great difficulty getting anyone to ship them from overseas. I'll just ordered a Makita Multitool off ebay .. $80 US
  18. There is also Kobus http://www.weatherphotos.co.za/
  19. Anyone know a decent site that give live and meaningful weather radar locally? (web site not app) I don't find Weather SA very useful http://www.weathersa.co.za/observations/radar
  20. I think most of the Agustas have been wiped out. Where are the Hawks based? There is no doubt about the corruption on that part of the deal (BAE/Zuma)
  21. Yes the Gripens are up there in terms of the latest generation multi role combat aircraft, some countries have even been considering it instead of the F35 But is it an appropriate solution for our needs? All whilst there was skills and inventory for maintenance of the Cheetah ./ Kfir C7 fleet Like any capex contract here, just an opportunity for palm greasing and graft.
  22. Aah the Cheetah .. Touted and spun as a great home-grown upgrade to the Mirage III in fact it was the Israelis who did all the work (secretly) They were great aircraft, total stuff up to get rid of them all in favor of the exotic and over-sophisticated Gripen. Those were not decisions made by common sense or practicalities...
  23. I think the whole drama is on YouTube, including the restoration, and a last minute problems before that flight
