If by Friday the water quality is not good enough, the swim leg will be scrapped and athletes will compete in a duathlon instead.

Firstly, welcome to the hub. Suggest you look at a Hard Tail (medium frame). Best bang for buck in the 5k range would probably be a Titan. Have a look at the classifieds.
