Our little one has been riding with us from about 10 months old. Started with short rides of about 3km and now at 1.5 years of age he can do about a 20km+ ride of about 1.5hours. He loves his single track and even leans in with me into the corners. The Feva seat works pretty well but don't know for how much longer since he is starting to take up quite a bit of space between the bars and my knees.

I commute home over Helshoogtepas, never had a problem but I am always aware of my surrounds. Currently more afraid of getting hit by a taxi since they drive like complete chops. If you want to skip Helshoogte then you can park at Cafe Pave just over Helshoogte, it is a nice ride out to Franschhoek and back there. They also have a good brekkie and coffee.

Wow that is a pretty cool build Lynnae! Can you post a picture of the tyre clearance with the brakes?

You can also hunt the classifieds or Gumtree for a "Hybrid" bike. Basically a road frame with some larger tyre clearance. Some frames go up to 1.95" x 700c. Geometry is between a Road and MTB. I bought one for R900, stripped off all the parts and sold it. Stripped the paint off and brazed on some Disc brake tabs. Started looking around for parts to build up my bike. All in all it cost me R5750.00 including all the work done, parts, etc. (Keep in mind that I wanted a vintage sortoff bike mixed with modern components)

Personally I prefer the Aramex PnP option, my reasons are as follows: 1. They deliver to your door(Work, home, etc.), so the buyer gets a better experience. He does not have to drive somewhere to collect his parcel. 2. All PnP's have the Aramex option, so I just need to get to a PnP to send the parcel off, I can do it at the time I go do some shopping. Not all towns have a Postnet. 3. The price is the same, even though the service is not. Store-to-door vs Postnet-to-Postnet, Overnight vs 3 days+ If you compare and take the best value for money option...it will most likely turn out to be Aramex.

Not really a bike you can walk in and buy anywhere but anyway, here is mine. 90's Trek 730 stripped and customized to use brake discs. *still need to wrap my cork grip tape on.

Frame is done and I will be collecting it tomorrow! Shaun did a great job, I could not have asked for anything better!

So my fork is done and my frame will be done today too. Pretty excited to get it back!

So the project is not completed yet. Still have to get the disc brake tabs brazed on and then the new wheelset fitted. But I took the bike out for a test on some singletrack. My home trails Boschendal behind our house served to be pretty rough on a me. After this ride I missed my 29" stumpy. Some photos that my wife took on our ride.

So I got her ready to ride with some old spares and took her out for a test ride. Not bad for a Sub 5k build.

Been hunting dodgy old bike shops for parts and with a friends help managed to get it to this point. Early Jan the disc brake tabs will go on. Still looking for a 10speed chain. Anyone got one lying around? Sent from my HUAWEI GRA-L09 using Tapatalk

So while we are talking about shifters and derailleurs, I am planning on running 10spd rear mated to a friction shifter, either bar mount or downtube mount. Anyone has some experience with running 10spd deraileurs with friction shifters? As far as I know it should work, meaning pull the cable to all gears, but the pull increment will be very small so one would need a very gentle shift.

Does anyone else know of someone that can weld disc brake tabs onto my frame and fork? (Besides Mr. Mercer)

Just checked again. Steerer is 25.4mm (1") and the headtube ID is 30mm.

Will double check this evening.

I think you misunderstood me. The fork is a 1" threaded steerer and the headtube uses a 1" threaded headset. As fat as I know I cant fit a 1 1/8th steerer and headaet in the headtube.

So I have been following this thread a bit and thought I would post by little project and join the conversation. I bought an old Trek 730 Multitrack (somewhere in the 90's model) for R900. Bike was in good condition but I was after the frame mostly. Have done so far: 1. I stripped the bike and got rid of the old, close to in it's chops square tapered BB. I was planning on running V or Cantilever brakes until I saw that the one brake post was broken off. 2. Stripped all the paint off and brushed it by hand. Will be going for the raw steel look showing off the welds and brazing. 3. Bought a used quil to 1 1/8th converter, used ritchey stem and drop bars. Bought a used seat, drop bar brake levers and bar tape. To be done: 1. Remove old brake posts and weld on disc brake posts. 2. Clear coat the frame to stop it from oxidizing. 3. Buy a used old 104bcd crankset and BB to run 1x front ring. 4. Buy a used 10speed MTB rear deraileur. 5. Buy a used friction shifter, either downtube or thumb and mod it to fit by the right brake lever. 6. Buy a used 27.2mm seatpost. 7. Buy a used or new disc and QR combo wheelset. 8. Buy some fresh rubber. 9. Buy used mechanical disc calipers(preferably road calipers so the cable ratio works out) 10. Ride as much as I can. 11. Enter the Karoobaix 2018.
