  1. Banhoek just keeps getting better and better...
  2. You may want to include your location, hard to give you a useful recommendation when so far we are reasonably certain your on planet earth, although likely somewhere in South Africa, but that’s still a few thousand square kilometers.
  3. I think it includes a free budget hooker
  4. Nope, no zip pockets but it’s a damned nice shirt. It should fit a large phone, but my pockets the last place I put one while ridding.
  5. The virtual events have been doing well for running, no reason we cannot do the same for cycling. I have seen a few do it for charity, so a few sponsored prizes, but the entires are paid at places like give and gain, then using strava as the leader board. Sure you don’t have that race spirit but you can always grab a few friends for some of that and it is timed so.
  6. Race venue is the problem, not the starting block. Sure you can maybe manage the groups coming in, but it would be no more than 50 people including organizers, marshals, vendors. The real problem is the end, you just kick people out when they finished? Would also have to change the race format, normally it’s first one to finish wins, we would have to go enduro without fastest time wins. Pretty sure level 1 still has gathering caps, pretty sure large events are not going to be allowed until such time as we have a working vaccine. I know nothing about spread in large crowds in open areas and from what I have read neither to the scientists at this point. Imagine something like the argus, that what like 50k riders. Imagine what a disaster it would be if by some random chance every starting block had like 1 or 2 asymptotic carriers and managed to ultimately end up infecting half the race. Without a working vaccine you basically restart the entire pandemic that way. I think it’s more likely that our next real race is far closer to 2022 than 2021 and you will be required to provide proof of vaccine in order to enter/start. Personally I hope to be wrong on that, but I also think given what’s happened globally even with government approval it would be remarkably irresponsible to hold a massive event until such time as we have a mass penetrated, working vaccine. As chilled as many of us have been regarding this, I think when it comes to actually attending a mass event with thousands of people, many of us will be giving that some serious thought before signing up, we as a species need to for once also consider other people, even if that’s just our family, friends and coworkers. Maybe the smaller, local events that usually attract a few hundred people can still get going, make a bit of a success of it, but something like Argus. I think your high risk points will be the venue, starting block and water points, the water points potentially being the highest risk, and then roadies do not liken self sufficient races, the massive tizzy online when TwonOceans started moving that way, with all the trail runners laughing at them.
  7. Still no gatherings of larger than 50, how would get that right for a race?
  8. Depends, they seldom get hired as actual hackers but penetration testers or security auditors, I know one, last I heard he could buy a Bitcoin each month if the tax max left his salary alone.
  9. Nothing wrong with one day, but you yourself said the budget it tight and there is zero rush to look the part. Quite frankly there is too much “part” to be looking at already. Lol
  10. Why be “correct”, ride your hike, enjoy it and forget what everyone else thinks.
  11. Isn’t everything ultimately, but no was bought locally and asked them twice, beginning of the year when I noticed it was getting long in the tooth and again when I eventually managed to drag out of them that they sent me a quote for something they do not have and was told both times they have no upgrade policy. They been sitting with it for over 2 weeks now and refuse to give an ETA for said replacement.
  12. They don’t do upgrades, I am waiting 3 weeks for my Fenix as they swap it for the exact model that you sent in. They also refuse to tell me how long it will be till I get my replacement.
  13. Well with a new fork it would be possible on the front but you going a mullet bike of note. A 29” wheel is considerably bigger than a 26”, maybe you’ll get the rim in the back, probably not, but not with a tyre on it. Some frame do cater for 2 wheel sizes, so check the spec for it, maybe it will take a 27.5. As for where to fix your bike, that’s going to need some extra info, you’ve pretty much given the known universe as your location, however logic dictates South Africa but that still like what, 2000km... lol
  14. Think it was here that someone mentioned they wanted on of those ultra mini phones. It’s back on ODO https://www.onedayonly.co.za/bm10-ultra-mini-phone-1-20200727.html

  16. Contextually it depends on who you are, for me personally my delivery address would be the next block over, my office is in front of their head office. So shipping would mean a driver goes to their office, takes it to Cape Town, then comes back to their office less 100m, walks up 3 flights of stairs to deliver it. So sure for him it’s driving a 100km, for me it’s on my way to the coffee shop. Regardless, don’t like their socks so no intention of using it, but not everyone lives 100km away. Still, it’s clearly stated, free just pay shipping. In my case were I to take it up I would not care about the, the only point I may gripe is if I were to take however many more for the free shipping and still had to have it shipped. In my specific case as I am just round the corner that to me would just seem like a waste. Why waste money, let me walk or even you take a walk, no sense in a courier delivery to the next block over... lol
  17. I think we all got the same code. Looks totally generic.
  18. Good idea, maybe they should put that as an instruction on the cardboard “remove packaging before use”...
  19. Nothing you will ever hear about. Once things are stable they will probably scale up their environments for the first few days until they wave subsides, but realistically even if millions of users sync at the exact same moment at their current scaling it is unlikely to be a problem. Strava will probably get hit harder as unlike garmin who simply needs to receive and file the data, maybe do some math for the averages. Strava on the other hand needs to process and analyze it first. They are likely to get hit harder than Garmin on that one. The segment calculations are going to smack them for a solid 6. I would recon then need to prepare more for garmin a recovery than garmin does. Also remember, that even if some people have done it manually, Garmin is still going to push everyone of those files over again, strava will reject most of them because of duplicate IDs. I am guessing on the die hard kom seekers have gone through the trouble of uploading manually so I recon a serious majority of users are not bothered and just waiting it out. Longer term what we could see is the app becoming less reliant on the server for syncing, as honestly it is silly that the app on your phone is also now utterly useless because of this. It should still be able to sync off your watch as well as provide most of your stats and basic functionality in a disconnected state.
  20. Never really found their socks that comfy, got 1 pair I won literally still sitting in the packaging from like last year. Falke was always better for me, but these days My feet have demanded Valera exclusivity. For me, there are no better socks out there. Versus wins in the pretty game, but for running and cycling I found them very uncomfortable.
  21. Calm down, it’s 2020, we cannot assume that’s a negative, who’s to say that’s not one oh is bucket list items and in actual fact he is planning on getting a garmin next year and has decided that in order to take that item off saidnlist he needs to achieve that goal before he can get the new garmin you, like a reward for the achievement.
  22. Personally I would leave it with garmin, but I work in IT, I understand what a shitshow this is and the immense measures they will take to prevent this, the uninformed are another question. This is still a pr nightmare and comparing this to Twitter is daft, Twitter does not own the hardware as well, Twitter getting hacked is not even remotely the same as garmin that’s like comparing apples and solar systems. They are going to spend billions convincing the uninformed that **** like this won’t happen again, and even then it will most certainly be a lie, does not matter what they do, there is no such thing as an unhackable system, at best you have an unhacked one. It is very possible this can happen again, far less likely to this extent, don’t think they will be stupid enough to separate all 4 core systems with a Chinese wall again. Anyone who was considering a garmin now will seriously reconsider that, those who own them may be less inclined to buy new ones when the time comes. This is going to follow them and influence buyer perception for some time to come still. Let’s be honest here, Samsung is by far the most popular android brand, yet it is also the least secure, least supported, slowest updated of them all. They have been caught many times faking benchmarks. Marketing is how they ensure the uninformed keeping shelling out loads of money for what is essentially at its core a piece if ****. Garmin on the other hand have to deal with the same uninformed people who are all up in arms because they again do not understand what is going on and most certainly do not understand how exponentially more difficult it is going to be to happen again, garmin going to be putting up walls that make the Great Wall of China look like a lego brick after this, their encryptions will have encryptions, staff access is going to be scrutinized to the enth degree, but all everyone is going to say is , they got hacked. I know that once this is over it will be more likely to see a pig sprout wings and fly than to hear about garmin being hacked again, it will be more likely that the flat earthers prove that the earth is flat, but I am among the informed. I am more inclined to trust them with my data. I will also never buy a Samsung product, Jeff Bezos himself could not pay me to use that insecure pile of crap, yet billions happily trust them.
  23. At this rate the political and commercial damage done so far may have long overshadowed that ransom fee. This is a apocalyptic level business damage. The resale value of garmin devices is going to tank.
