  1. HEre's a chance to shout into the void .... https://www.flui.city/capetown/posts/71340-comment-on-the-city-s-draft-walking-and-cycling-strategy Cape Town's rapid growth demands a strategic focus on sustainability, equity, and resilience in urban planning. Historically, the city's transportation system has prioritised private vehicles, resulting in severe congestion, pollution, and increased traffic fatalities. This car-centric approach is not sustainable for future growth, and cities worldwide are finding that the continuous expansion of road infrastructure only worsens these issues. To address these challenges, the city must adopt a bold shift towards active mobility, particularly walking and cycling. These modes not only reduce congestion and environmental impact but also play a critical role in supporting public transport systems. Cape Town's existing infrastructure is not designed to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists, often creating dangerous and hostile environments for these vulnerable road users. This strategy outlines Cape Town's commitment to reversing the traditional reliance on private vehicles by creating a more inclusive, people-focused transport system. It aims to reposition walking and cycling as primary, safe, and sustainable modes of transport, promoting equity, accessibility, and environmental sustainability. Through strategic planning, the City can address the current gaps in infrastructure, integrate active mobility into urban design, and enhance collaboration across government bodies to achieve long-term, sustainable transport solutions. The strategy supports and aligns with the Integrated Development Plan (IDP), Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan (CITP), Climate Change Strategy and the Universal Access Policy. Once approved, the strategy will update and replace: The Cycling Strategy (2017); and The draft Non-motorised Transport (NMT) Strategy (2017) In terms of section 17 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, you can submit comments to the municipality in respect of the draft strategy. You can also access the information at: City libraries Subcouncil offices In the document download section below Contact us For more information and general enquiries about the draft strategy, contact: Dirk du Preez Telephone: 021 444 3805 Email: urbanmobility.CT@capetown.gov.za https://www.flui.city/capetown/posts/71340-comment-on-the-city-s-draft-walking-and-cycling-strategy
  2. Ah of course ja... Looking forward to race report
  3. What's the big race you prepping for?
  4. I agree with the sentiments expressed. No way would I ride that at night. I would park in Darling or inRiebeek Kasteel and ride out towards Moreesburg and explore that area. Lots of nice gravel out there that I've ridden quite often - far more rural. I would also do it on a weeknight.
  5. I rode the Woodstock bridge on Sunday around lunchtime, about 50 m behind 2 other guys that I tailgated from the waterfront. Lots of tension there. People loitering and watching. Definitely a no go area, I'm rather going to take my chances with the taxis on strand street and the bridge. On Saturday I was on the MTB solo and opted to head over the Glen and tafelberg road and then back to Southern suburbs over the mountain... Saw not one other rider and no hikers past tafelberg. Spooky It's not feeling so lekker riding like this with a thought that suggests I'm just waiting for my number to come up but I'm not prepared to stop riding. Might trade in one of my stable and look for a higher end gravel bike ... Any excuse will do
  6. Just sold my 830 on the classifieds ... Very adequate navigation. Smartphone will do the navigation but it's not a great on the bars solution. Garmin 530 second hand on the classifieds is the way to go at entry level.
  7. And gloves on smartphone screens ... Or even sweaty fingers with sunscreen on them....
  8. At first glance a smartphone might seem a good alternative to a bike computer but they aren't really fit for the purpose. Weather is a factor. USB ports don't like getting wet. So a good waterproof protective case is needed. Also screen visibility in sunlight can be an issue. By the time you've covered those costs you might be better off investing in a Garmin 130 or similar which will come with a mount.
  9. I've also been doing this but from the southern suburbs it's not easy - the 2 viable routes out north involve tackling either the Koeberg interchange (M5 and N1 from Voortrekker road) or through Pinelands and then negotiating the bridge at Vanguard. Neither one is safe from a crime and car perspective - then there's getting back to the south and timing that. It's a problem.
  10. Ah right well - of course it would be bloody Savages dropping me on Hels as per normal - D split there - I was in the second little groupetto - I can't tell you how many times I've just had to accept my fate as a bunch of savages heads off up the road.
  11. You might have been the mixed team in the floral shirts? If so you okes rode very well - you had to chase back on after someone had to stop just before hels I think - caught us just before the railway line on the Franschoek road.
  12. I started in D - but ended up in E cos of a mechanical outside Wellington
  13. I just wanted to get away from the DC team that was pulling my bunch. Noodling along and riding dangerously (see previous comments). So I attacked! twice!! It's a grandiose term for what was more like a threshold interval for 5 mins or so but predictably they upped the speed a bit. It was them that sprinted past me for the win while I noodled across last
  14. That's horrible to hear. Hope the bike is ok. Losing my appetite for peleton riding. Tried to ride away from a DC team that was leading my group of stragglers because they were scaring me. 45kmph in a bunch of 20 riders with hands on the tops and overlapping the wheel in front of him .... Turning around to see where his mates are .... Makes me nervous. Anyway, was a good day out even though my report card has read "mamil doesn't play well with others" since grade 1.
  15. Ha ha ... I don't see even my colleagues in my demoted D batch tolerating 2 watts per kg for 8 hours!!
  16. I'm a member but increasingly annoyed with them. There is hardly any visible advocacy for us and what there is seems completely ineffectual. Development after development goes up with new roads being built with no riding infrastructure incorporated. Silence on crucial issues and an endless stream of posts telling us to share the road, ride single file and wear bright clothing.
  17. Interesting. Most of mine is at sea level through to a max of about 900m and it says I'm acclimated to 1000m.
  18. I've been doing nothing but endurance training for months and months for the terrifying Munga so I'm definitely not peaking - I very much doubt I have the 1 and 2 and 5 minute power to cope with a surging bunch. And I'm scared of the risk of falling in a big bunch of mad mamils so definitely looking for a few agter osse to keep me company off the back
  19. I use the intervals.icu ftp estimate to track progress - I find that a flat out 40 minute zwift race is far preferable to a boring 20 minute ftp test. I like the garmin endurance score and heat acclimation metrics and the vo2max estimate. Also by feel on certain staple sessions in my library - there's one called war of attrition which is essentially short vo2max intervals with longer recovery intervals at threshold followed by a 30 second high anaerobic effort at the end which gives a nice subjective indicator of where I am.
  20. This is a tapering ride for me so my plan is to get dropped and ride solo or in a small group off the back of D batch (my seeding seems to have slipped quite a bit) ---
  21. I haven't ordered from fruugo and never seen that product anywhere. I have bought this before https://www.takealot.com/ztto-universal-adapter-for-garmin-mount/PLID70845803 and used it on my little garmin inreach messenger tracker thingy - rock solid sticky on the device. Not sure if that's any good for your use case
  22. I don't have a sub 3.... (Sigh) It could be a marker of maturity to note that I don't want to add "yet" to that sentence, an indicator of acceptance of age but there's also a youthful idiot inside who says don't be soft and has entered the 99er to try for 1a seeding again.
  23. Ja if that rain is rolling in it gets a bit too risky for my liking.
  24. I really want to support this outfit and I do all their events most years but jislaaik sometimes it's quite hard. I'm definitely not making 2 trips to Paarl.
  25. Number collection at start?
