  3. Geez, that's huge....the size of the frame makes it look like a 26er
  4. Nice write-up on my favourite trail At the limit: extreme mountain bikingPeter Travers expected brutal slopes when riding one of the world?s toughest bike trails ? but not killer catshttp://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/men/article3898814.ece MintSauce2008-06-05 04:16:13
  5. I supply the hardware industry and believe me, some guys are just short of hitting a panic. Our prices have gone up 45% this year as a result of a 60% hike in the steel price, steel being our largest expense. In spite of the 45% price increase, our turnover has not climbed. Do the math....we're moving a LOT less stock.
  6. I would agree that a cheap disc is inferior to a solid v-brake. The truth is that irrespective of which option you choose, eventually you'll want to upgrade to proper discs. By going with the cheap discs now, you won't have to upgrade wheels later when you get discs, as the wheels you get with a v-brake equipped bike will in all likelihood not be disc-compatible. Also, unless the shop is prepared to swop out components, you won't get a better fork/wheels on a bike with v's as all the components will be of a lower spec than the disc model anyway. And in any case, at this price level asking the shop to drop the discs in favour of upgrading other components is not worth it IMO because the price difference between those entry-level discs and v's is so little that the upgrades they will be prepared to offer you will still be pretty cheap and very close to bottom of the range. As for the frame, I have the same frame built up as a single speed and have had no issues. GT's aluminium frames have always been pretty solid. Known many friends who have owned them over the years and have never heard of a failure....that very rare. I'd say go for it My 0.17c
  7. I doubt it'll be possible. From what I remember that part is riveted on. I could be wrong though....it's been a while since I fiddled with XTR. GoLefty will know for sure. Now if it was SRAM then the answer is a definite yes. Every single component is replacable on the X.O rear derailleur. I have removed and reinstalled that particular part myself. If you're not mechanically inclined you just send it to the agents I they take care of it for a minimal fee. It's the only SRAM invention that Shimano hasn't copied. They copy the looks and the ease-of-use features like adjustable shifter mounts to look like they know as much as SRAM, but they're to greedy to copy something like this that will save the consumer money. Go SRAM!
  8. Except that I'd like to see The Collective IV in a year or two so would prefer to pay for it
  9. $28 for the dvd $11 postage Got here within a week and no customs or VAT added
  10. While their attitude sucked, it has to be said that there is one specific trail in Tokai that was built as a national DH course a few years back. We ride up that one every time as well but I can imagine that if you were on that specific trail they might be more inclined to get aggro. Still doesn't justify it. I'd like to see them try that on one of our grouprides. I can imagine it might get ugly.
  11. Went to the post office this morning to pick up my copy of Seasons....the new dvd by The Collective Just finished watching it. It is truly beautiful. These guys have certainly raised their game since ROAM in '06. Even more impressive and beautiful cinematography, great soundtrack and incredible riding. They follow seven riders over the course of a year, basically breaking it up into winter, spring, summer and fall, hence the title. The focus is not so much on the riding as it is in your typical MTB dvd, but don't think that's a bad thing. The riding is still the main component, but it's got a completely different feel to the other dvd series out there, even different to the ROAM and The Collective dvds. It's certainly a lot more interesting and gives you a good idea of what the riders are about as opposed to just showing you what they're capable of on a bike. It really is something special. Get your hands on a copy! Got mysef a copy from www.sportsflicks.com. They were running a pre-order special(that got extended after it became available....not sure if it still is) whereby you could choose another dvd from a shortlist for free It is also available on www.chainreactioncycles.com
  12. Specialised The Captain 2Bliss(that's marketing idiot's speak for tubeless)....light, cheap and better performance overall than the mighty Kenda Nevegal....IMHO

  14. I will say the RAJIs are great performing gloves....they just don't last very well
  15. I currently use the 661 RAJI. I've had them for 10 months and they have about a month or 3 left in them. Some of the stitching is coming loose and the screenprinted logo on the top of the glove started coming off within a month so I peeled it off so it doesn't look completely ***. Taking into account that a I hear they are close to R400 locally(not sure....bought mine overseas) and I'd say stay away! Another downside is that they don't have a velcro strap....just an elastic. Just makes it harder to get them on and off. Fox SA is FINALLY importing the Fox Incline glove again after not doing so for a few years. I had them before the RAJIs and they lasted at least 3 years. They still had some miles left in them when I forgot them in a restaurant overseas after post-ride bevvies. Went back the next morning and the cleaners had thrown them out cos they looked old and they figured i didn't want them anymore. I prefer them cos, like the RAJI, they have no pads on top of the glove. I find it much more comfortable than padded gloves. They're at Due South for about R200....I'll be picking up a pair soon!
  16. You go to your LBS and have them put some sealant in the tyre and inflate it. The sealant will prevent punctures. If you are a home mechanic, just buy a bottle and do it yourself. Top up every month or three. Also buy a tubeless tyre repair kit for when the hole is too big for the sealant to work. In this case, the leaking sealant will indicate where exactly the hole is. Get the shop to show you how to use the repair kit. It works exactly the same as the repair inserts used for punctures on car tyres.
  17. How long have you been running them? If Stan's website says it's fine to use it, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a tubeless specific tyre. You can still use it, but in my experience Kenda tyres sometimes take a while longer before they seal properly due to the lower tpi rating of the casing. It might be the issue...?
  18. A contour path is definitely on the cards. Meurant has mentioned this to me on a few occasions. This is why I'm quite keen to find out what they're currently busy with.
  19. Cool Homer....keep us posted. I might be in JHK again over the weekend. Would be cool to check it out.
  20. Good news....can't wait! We could just phone him and ask where it is but the man is busy enough as it is and I know they prefer to finish a trail before the traffic hits it. Pity SARA doesn't ride in Stellies anymore....she's got a built-in 6th sense that detects new ST
  21. Oh....as for the erosion on Eliotti/NES. I rode JHK on Saturday afternoon and must say that the tight switchbacks in the upper section are actually riding much better now that the 'erosion' has formed some nice grooves/berms. You can really rail them now. I can imagine it'd be a bit of a bitch riding up it though.
  22. Someone mentioned earlier in the thread that there was some work being carried out at the moment. Is this true...? Meurant has spoken of extending the ST to the area 'before' the entrance gate, so to speak....up on the left in the general area that the DH track is in...? Any word/rumours etc...?
  23. Generally, international accepted etiquette dictates that the uphill rider has right of way, I presume since it is much easier for a rider going downhill to get started, as someone else mentioned. Meurant's previous crew manager was a guy called Emile. Meurant did the general layout and Emile manned the team that actually built both the Canary trails and the extension to Never Ending Story He said that Canary was specifically intended as an uphill trail as the area is very sandy and would not handle high-speed downhill use. NES was not initially intended as downhill only, but from speaking to him I gathered that the idea eventually was for the two trails to create a loop of sorts. That being said, it isn't sign posted as such. I can understand people wanting to ride it in the opposite direction, perhaps for something different, but honestly, having ridden it in both directions, the layout just suits a clockwise loop better IMO. By this I mean that on Canary the trail is built to be as flat as possible and lots of technical features that would make for some fun riding on a downhill were removed to ease climbing....just look at the amount of rocks next to the trail on Upper Canary. I still dream of a Freeride trail in JHK....something that can't be ridden uphill even if you were silly enough to try. The terrain just begs for it!
