  3. Two South African mountain bikers are out of the Absa Cape Epic after failing anti-doping tests. One of the riders has been provisionally suspended by the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) and in the meantime is not eligible to take part in any races sanctioned by the International Cycling Union (UCI) - including the Cape Epic.   4. My partner was knocked off his bike on Saturday and can no longer ride the Epic. We have a physiotherapy package that we have paid for with a private physiotherapist that we have for sale if soemone still has not found a suitable service. DM me for more details. Graeme

  6. So what are you up to training wise this week? Some climbing? Intervals? Or tapering your ass off? I was planning to ride a 2h session on Wednesday and Thursday and maybe focus some more on stretching every day. Nothing on Friday and Saturday though. What are your plans?

  11. The Absa Cape Epic welcomes back two-times winners of the event Sally Bigham (35) of the United Kingdom and partner Esther Süss (39) of Switzerland.   12. Four-time Absa Cape Epic winner Karl Platt (36) and former Swiss mountain bike champion Urs Huber (28) of the Bulls will participate in this year’s Absa Cape Epic. The demanding race, now in its eleventh year, will kick off with the Prologue at Meerendal Wine Estate on Sunday, 23 March and finish eight days later (Sunday, 30 March) at its long-established Lourensford Wine Estate finish.   13. Four-times winner of the Absa Cape Epic, Christoph Sauser (37) of Switzerland, will team up with Frantisek Rabon (30) for the first time as Team Meerendal-Songo-Specialized. Sauser won the race in 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2006. This year’s race, which takes place from 23 to 30 March 2014, will once again take 1 200 riders through some of the Western Cape’s most unspoilt territory.   16. In 2004 a little stage race at the tip of Africa started as a ripple in the mountain biking pond. A few adventurous souls took up the challenge. That year Hanlie Booyens won it with Sharon Laws and Bryan Strauss came 2nd in the master category. His daughter (Mariske) was 13 and rode around the campsite on her little bike.   18. The Absa Cape Epic, the Untamed African Mountain Bike Race, will match the Ladies prize purse to the Men’s prize purse in 2014. The Absa Cape Epic is already the largest total prize purse in the world for mountain biking and the increase to R690 000 ($68 048) for the Ladies purse now takes the race’s total prize purse for all categories to R1 564 000 ($154 241).   22. The Absa Cape Epic, now in its eleventh year, is oversubscribed each year with followers doing their bit to gain an entry into the following year’s race. The early bird entries for the 2014 race (whereby a number of entrants get to participate on a first come, first served basis) took place the day after the finish of this year’s race (25 March 2013), and were sold out in only 34 seconds, once again proving the popularity of the race.
