So, I noticed the other day when I was cleaning my tandem, the shimano jockey wheels hardly spin at all.... vs my sram XO jockey wheels on my MTB which spin like crazy when i spin them in my hand. This made me think about the drag differential (if any) between the different jockey wheels... ceramic bearings vs normal bearings etc...

Logically it makes sense to me that a bearing which spins slower (less) will have more drag then one which spins better.... after reading some blogs and calling my local bike shop, it seems that there is a negligible difference on the effective power output through the drive train.... BUT i am not convinced.... what say you more experienced hubbers on this matter???

Well, I think the difference is probably almost nothing.

But maybe over the course of a couple of days of stage racing, if you add it all up you may have saved a few watts at the end which I suppose counts for something.

You do also get ones with ceramic bearings, so there must be a "reason" for it.......

Drag or no drag.......it's a drag on my conscience.

Just the sound of drag is a drag!

I ride KCNC bearing jockey wheels and lube them often!

Just get one of these like Schleck used.

And where did he end in the TdF and where did the tainted steak eater with his regular pulleys finish?

I think the diffs is insignificant. I prefer the road type jockey wheels with bushes over the bearing types - they wear but generally don't fail even if you perceive the drag to be more. At least you can finish the race or ride home.

I also run the KCNC jockey wheels, they are really smooth, I have the cermaic ones and they're very very smooth.

Do you ride off-road? I find they collect grass and debris very easily and need to be cleaned literally after every ride...its not a big deal to clean and lube them, they just require a lot of attention.
