Looking for some sound advice please

I can get a second hand Mongoose at a reasonable price but the bike is a Medium and I need a large.. Would it be worth my while extending the stem?

What would the disadvantages be in riding a smaller "converted" bike?

What would the advantages be?

What other "extensions" would you suggest?

Thanks

It doubt if it will work. Frames are built according to persons size and you cannot change that geometry with "extensions"

Sepia, the thing is, you could most likely take a medium size bike, and get it to "fit" you.

What will be different is the way the bike handles. And you should consider that.

Rather be patient, and save your hard earned money for now, and wait for the correct sized frame to come along

I know how you feel, there are a lot of good deals for the Small and med bikes compared to the Large ones and large bikes go fast.

Don't wast your cash on a bike that wont fit you though rather just wait and be quick on the for sale section and you will get a good bike. Took me almost a year to find a bike here on the hub, that was everyday of searching and watching my RSS feeds for the hub for sale section.

It was worth the wait and got a practically new bike for 8 grand cheaper than my LBS was selling it,and that took a year! Wait its worth it :P

I have a good friend that recently bought a medium hardtail - he is 1.83m. Seems pretty happy but says his old bike was more comfortable, but that had pretty relaxed geometry compared to the new one. I'm still convinced he should have waited a bit longer (2nd hand bike) but I haven't heard any regrets from him. He reckons it doesn't climb as well because of the size and hasn't noticed any benefit on the downhills.

He is running it stock too, only change is a longer seatpost as the stock 250mm one was too short.

Thanks guys for the opinions. Yip, guess will wait, and wait........maybe after what i have heard, just buy a new "right" bike and bite the bullet now and not on the saddle. Appreciate the comments, thanks

btw how tall are you and what bike do u currently ride?

size is sometimes a bit different ito CM's vs geometry.

i am 1.82m tall and ride medium hardtails, used to own a L softtail but it was a boat compared to a medium.

measure the Medium mongoose or ask some1 that owns one for a test ride on theirs(same size) and c for yourself.

Bike sizing is pretty difficult and a science that I don't profess to know anything about.

I am 1.82m tall and used to ride a large which according to the bike manufacturers web site was right for me but I was never comfortable on the bike. I now ride a medium with a longer seatpost and a shortish 90mm stem and the bike feels great. It feels like an extension of my own body. Perhaps I am a freak with long legs and a short upper body but it works for me.

You will also find that not all manufacturers size their bikes the same way. One manufacturers large may be similar to another manufacturers medium.

All I am saying is that if you like the bike it may be worth taking it for a test ride before making your decision but only buy it if you are 100% sure because riding a bike that you are uncomfortable on really takes the pleasure out of cycling.

Just measure the top tube of you current L bike and then the top tube of the M. Seat tube measurements are useless. If I go to a Silverback 29" bike, I need a S. I'm on a M HT now and had a L FS before that. All with more or less the same top tube, give or take 10mm.
