brad890 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I'm guessing quite a few people out there have the shimano XT M770 chainset, what I'm wanting to know are there other chainrings one can use on these cranks or are you limited to the shimano ones namely the big chain ring as I see mine is going to need replacing relatively soon. anyone who has had luck with other chainrings as well as comments would be appreciated.

HowellingWulf Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I saw some cheaper colour coded replacements at Solomons Woodmead. Cant recall the manufacturer though... Aerizone, KMC, KCNC. Not too sure. Maybe none of the above.
MTB_Roadie Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Then you won't have the XT quality chain rings anymore....those chain rings are strong tho, why not buy another XT crank, then you also have the other chain rings for spare or otherwise just swop over the new crank?
rock Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 ja any shimno blad should work, might not line up exactly with the shape of the spider.....but that would just be cosmetic..... as a matter of interest I was looking for an outer blade for the same crank, I tried to test fit a truvativ chainring from my wofe's bike and it didnt fit even though the BCD was the same, you would have needed to grind it back a bit to actually fit on...... SLX would be your best value/fit/look etc.

I know for a fact Raceface makes chainrings that fits this crank. That is, if Raceface still exists... One thing you'll need to look out for when using a different model of chainring is that the tabs (into which the chainring bolts screw) can be longer for certain cranks. This can be an issue even when using the same manufacturer's products. I once tried to fit a Shimano XT middle blade to a Shimano Deore crank and it didnt work because the tabs were too long and didnt fit into the slots on the Deore crankarm.

As long as the bolt circle diameter fits, anything goes. Have mixed Raceface and Shimano, no problems. I have found that rings made from 7075 aluminium last longer.
