yes you can. Currently running tubeless with non UST tires on my DH machine. Takes the gnar on the chin and goes back for more. Does burp a bit on the big edges, but that's expected.

Just make sure the rim is taped up properly, apply stans as needed, and happy riding. Just make sure you check up every so often on the amount of sealant remaining. If the tire doesnt hold pressure, without any visible signs of damage, more than likely means no more sealant.

if i buy the stans kit can i do it @ home or do you need a bikeshop?

the tricky bit is getting enough air in quickly enough to get the bead on the non-UST casing to seat on the rim. If you have a compressor, you golden.

Many guides on the net for DIY taping of your rim. It's not difficult at all.

You can do it at home, you just need a good pump (or take it to the garage and use their compressor if you struggle). The hardest part is getting the air in quickly enough for it to seal using a normal floorpump. The trick is to use plenty of soapy water to get it to seal initially.

Also, as Capricorn has said, use more sealant if you find you're losing pressure.

I did my first ghetto conversion using proper UST tyres in December, pretty easy. Yesterday, we converted my brother's non-UST 2.35 Kenda Nevegals, and it was a bit different to the first experience. Mainly, the setup needed more Stan's to seal initially, as the fit is not as tight on the rim.

do you think i must go the ghetto way or the stans kit with the tape and tubless valve?

If you gonna spend some bucks I would say rather go with Bontrager strips and a valve!

Easier to seal and much easier in the unlikely event you have to put in tjooop ...

Tubeless on non-UST tyres and rims - easily achievable. 800km later with no issues!

I agree with BigBen, the Bontrager strips are definitely the way to go.

Beats the Stans strip hands down. When I finally put on proper UST's, not easy to do, lots of effort needed.

Found the non-bontrager valve very flaky, always had the feeling i was going to snap it off
