IANAE but I think it's a case of the best tool for the job. On a tight XCO course I believe a 26er is better, but on a marathon 29ers have the edge. A simplistic view, as a lot of other factors must come into play...

Ok thanks I get it so 29ers should be used for marathons. Is that why Kevin Evins used his Volcan 29er on the Karoo to Coast (mainly jeep track and flat gravel roads) and the rest of his races on his 26er soft tail?

It was a Scott RC 29er.

You can see it buy the drop of the stem and the angle of the top of the frame.Same bike as Kevin Evans was using in the epic.

Wrong, 899 is a 26er frame that weighs, wait for it....899 grams. The only difference was that it was a 2011 graphics package.

You'll note that I didn't explicitly state that! I gather it's a sort of rule of thumb - tighter, more technical courses suit the 26ers and the longer, less technical ones the 29ers. I have heard this is why 29ers are not so popular in Europe - the courses are different...

But at the end of the day it's up to the rider to decide.

There is a diffrence between the RC and the 899.

899 is top of the range and the RC is second but only in the 26er range.

it's a 26er !

I know it's a 26er, I was not the one that claimed that is was a 29er. The RC in all the Scott range are similar to the Pro, only the components and colour differs, the frames are the same.

Would Burry have done better on a 26er?

(edit: just stirring. Burry had 2 crashes and could have been right up there on the 29er. We'll see next time  )

Stirring further - Would Burry have crashed if he was on a 26er? I was at the rock garden and saw all types of bikes crashing including full suspension, 29ers and 26ers - interesting the one bike I saw that hardly ever hit the dirt was the GT zaskar - but again they were not exactly on the front either sadly!
