Thanks for the response guys. I went past Makro again and they have a few of these general purpose compressors available ranging from 27l/min to about 170l/min, but I'm tending to agree that it's that initial burst that really makes the difference so without some sort of tank, I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Decided to do the honourable thing and ... return my dinky-toy compressor for a refund  They did also have a 24l big-daddy compressor, but that's take up too much room and I wouldn't exactly call it portable :)

All you need is a burst of air.

You have that in your car spare wheel as an air container. Get a length of hose two valve megeftertjies and a normal ball stopcock to regulate the air. Those ones with the red lever.

You can then re-pump your tyre with the Dinky Toy compressor wthout spending a lot of money.

(very) Soapy water liberally applied all around the rim and bead, once the tyre is on the rim, with a soft brush and then inflating with a normal floor pump has never failed me. As soon as you start pumping air normally comes out around the valve area, ensure its at the top and just squash the tyre down on to the rim with your hand. Works every time.

What he says +1.

Or put it at the bottom and squash it down that way.

Was this to mount on a UST tyre on a UST rim? I'm using UST tyres on non-UST rims and haven't been able to mount it with just a floor pump yet

It probably helps having UST tyres on UST rims, but I have no problem seating my Larsens or Mountain Kings on my XT rims with a crappy old floor pump.

Just use a bomb, Rub some sealant round the bead, inflate with a bomb. Leave for a few minutes inflated. Deflate, break the bead in a small area. Insert sealant, and pop the bead back. Inflate with hand or foot pump.

SPOT ON MAN.

Exactly the soapy water is crucial. A floor pump has never failed me.
