Even the comms towers in Lagos is strong enough to support the sun. Pic taken with the Samsung Galaxy Note. The sky is very hazy now with the Harmattan wind blowing in full swing.

Hi I am looking for some advise please. want to buy a cam and have narrowed it down to these 2. As this is all my budget allows at the moment. 1) Nikon D3100 2) Canon 1100D. Both have +- the same specs.

I would really appreciate your comments.

Tx

you need to decide if you want a nikon or canon.

its like comparing sram and shimano.

also understand that you generally start to build up lenses, good glass is where your money will eventually end up being spent later on.

your body will change over time, but lenses tend to last a lot longer.

thus i chose canon as i found its easy to get hold of second hand canon lens' etc.

basically you pick a brand and stick to it, changing over is a costly experience and a lot boils down to personal preference.

what i can suggest is you have a close look at each camera and pick it up feel it in your hands and decide which works best and feels best in YOUR hands.

i have a canon 7D now with a good collection of lenses. i did start on a sony a200 (which i loved) but this was stolen and i opted to go the canon route as i said due to the availability of second hand accesories

Thanx for the advise. Lenses can get quite costly I've seen. I know the 18-55 and 75-300 lens you get with the package is not the best but its good to start off with. But I think at the end of the day I will be going with the Canon as it for me is a bit lighter and feels more comfortable

yup as i say its one of those topics people will argue to the death.

both are just as capable.

you will however find that a heavier camera is generally more sturdy. but damn your hand gets tired

i think the canon 7D which i have now weighs over 800grams roughly double the 1100D

but mine does have a magnesium body and all sorts of weather sealing and other crap.

if i were to tell you to buy one or the other i would be biased and say get canon

yeah it hasn't come with on the bike yet, my inherent lack of riding skill doesn't warrant the risk

I am biased, so will say Canon.

Also use a 7D and love it to bits.

I just find the Canon's a bit easier to navigate and use than the Nikon's.

But Geecee made a very valid comment in obtaining lenses secondhand easier from the Canon stable and often great deals are to be had.

That 18-55 mm. kit lens is surprisingly good.

I couldn't agree more with Geecee. The Nikon / Canon debate is like Audi / BMW or SRAM / Shimano - personal preference, both are excellent products.

It's debatable, but I would say Canon has a bigger second hand market so you can pick up lenses a little cheaper.

Not sure where you are located, but go into a decent camera shop and play with both. See which one feels better and works more logically (sounds wierd but the new cameras have a lot of features enabled/disabled via the menu system - so make sure the menu layout makes sense to you. They are fairly different across Canon and Nikon.)

I doubt you will be disappointed with either of them :-)
