You can chrome almost anything and you can definitely chrome aluminium. There's one or two extra plating steps compared to steel chroming, so it's more expensive and adds a fair amount of weight, though.

wow that looks pretty porn - imagine a frame like that!

I'm waiting for some paint stripper to do it's job on my little morewood, right this instant!

Will post the finished result when all the paint is off, and I've applied my new decal kit which should be arriving tomorrow

can't wait!

ok... so my evening stripping paint didn't go as well as I'd hoped.

The paint bubbled and came off fairly easily on the rear triangle (just using a dry rag, and some hard work). But the front triangle is a different story.

All the paint stripper seems to do is turn the gloss coat to matt. If rubbed intensely with the rag, one can get down to the metal, but the metal there is a yellowy colour, and it's a lot of work. Not nearly as easy as the rear triangle.

Will a plastic scraper help?

What about a hard nylon bristled scrupping brush? Will it damage the frame? Will the bristles withstand the paint stripper?

What paint stripper are you using?

As in my first post, I used Durham Paint Stripper (approx R65-00 from Builders WH)

If I had to do it from scratch, wouldve taken me about 12-13 hours I guess.

I applied a fairly thick coat, waited for 10-15min, used a plastic scraper (divider thingy in toolbox), wiped off with damp cloth and then used fine steel wool.

Even with the frame looking the way it did in the beginning, I had to apply 2-3 coats in most regions.

Hehe, I found that working on the rear triangle was the most difficult.

I like the way this thread turned out after my initial post, have learnt a lot and will definitely take on a similar project in future. Its very rewarding

Rudo,

I could only get round to a Universal Paints yesterday, so i bought some other brand of stripper form them. The guy said it's the same as Duram. It's nearly finished now, so I'll have to get some more (and I'll go with the Duram.

On the rear triangle it did start to work after about 15min. the paint started doing that squiggy-peely thing, and wiped off. The front traingle either has more coats of paint, or a differebt type, because the stripper doesn't even make the paint bubble.

Patches, I don't know why the 'paint' on your Wood came off the rear easier than the front. But all Morewoods are powdercoated, not painted. The 'yellow' you see on the frame is the acid prep prior to the coating.

Is the rear tri 'yellow' as well?

If it is powdercoated you are going to battle with paint stripper.

Interesting to hear the Woodies are powdercoated.

I was wanting to send mine up for a new spray job, but if powdercoated I can get if done far cheaper and quicker in CT. Just need to get new decals!

aah crud!

The rear triangle doesn't have the yellowish look.... so I guess it's only the front that's powdercoated.

I have another Morewood that was stripped down to raw alu (not by me), so I thought it would be the same with this one... but guess not.

So next step... how to remove a powdercoat?

Im glad I waited with mine..

So If Its powdercoated and one has it sandblasted.. How rough does it end up? I would like to go "pollished" in the end so does that meen I'll have to try sand it smooth after Ive had it blasted?

powdercoat does come off with elbow grease. one of the first frames I got done ended up looking crap so I took it down to bare metal again. I got paint stripper from my paint supplier; no idea which, it was industrial though with many large warnings. I painted the entire frame, then stuck the lot in a thick plastic bag (I strip and paint a lot of stuff, a few tricks I've learnt along the way) and left it for a while. Came back, put on the thickest gloves I could find, and went at it with a steel brush and steel wool. Some places just fell off, some places needed two or three coats.

mine came out pretty rough from the sandblasting. If it's alu, just start sanding with wet paper working up the grits, it'll go pretty quick. if it's steel, same deal, just a damn side longer and more sweat!

haha! glad I could be the guinea pig!

I've done some reading up, and there's this link on here

https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/93192-removing-powder-coating/

and on other sites, I've read that 'Aircraft Paint Remover' works. Dunno where to get that... but I'll look around.

Also there's a place that acid baths mags to remove powdercoating. They say that sandblasting is harsh.

If you do go the blasting route... go for a bead blast
