Did you remove the pivot bearing before you started removing the paint. Could you please show a pic of this area when you get a chance?

+1 me want to see that too!dry.gif

Yup! Took it apart completely. When I stripped my Izumu (latsyear sometime) and replaced the pivot bearings, I made a crude, but effective, bearing puller. Just some M10 Threaded bar, some nuts, washers and a No. 22 socket (cos it's almost the same as the outer diameter of the bearings).

Haven't got any pics of that area with me right now. Will take some though. I'm guessing it's the rear triangle you wanna see?!

Why did you not remove the head badge?

I would have if it was screwed on. I'm not sure how it's attached and I didn't want to remove in case it refuses to go back. But I bought a cheapy toothbrish to help with the paint stripping in the hard to reach places.

haha... yeah, even though I was wearing them gloves, I still got burnt a few times from the odd splash here and there.

Here's a pic of the other side of the frame. This is the effect that the steel wool has on the goldy finish. I know it's not very thourough but this was literally 2min worth of polishing with the wool... just to see what it looks like. With some more care and effort, it's gonna look killer!

Those badges are on with double sided tape. Stand the frame up with the badge face to the sky. Then take fishing line and let it run from one side of the head tube to the other. Then just wiggle it underneath the badge but keep it tight against the head tube.

Awesome, thanks! that'll be one less hard-to-reach place I'll have to scrub!

If only the gusseting was on with double sided tape!

Looking fannytastic over there, have always liked naked bikes.

yup! me too! Here's my Ndiza's 'big-brother'... this gave me the idea to have them both nekkid... all matchy-matchy like!

(although my Izimu's nekkidness could do with a polish)

Oh! and the decal kit I got for the Ndiza is the same colour scheme... black and red.

Take a good photo of it, then find a printer who'll do the decals for you, try asking at hobby crafts shop. surprised the onone guys didn't want to help, very unfriendly :(

Try hubber TYRONE. He does all vinyls and they look great and stick like crazy. If u send him a pic of what you want he can replicate it.

...last update before I post pics of the finished product.

I found a new secret weapon. I dose the paint with stripper. Leave it for 5 min. Dose again. Then 10 min later I work off the paint with steel wool dipped in paint stripper. This works very well especially in hard to reach areas.

Here's some pics of the frame right before I took a break to have lunch and go ride:

And Hairy, here's a pick of the pivot bearing area on rear triangle, as requested:

(As you can see, the paint in the CNC'd out part is a real mission to get out!)

Hey Patches

You have really gotten me interested in doing this to the Shova as well. I am willing to give it a test run and if I don't like the bare finish after a couple of weeks I will simple get the frame powder coated matte black.

I would like to know how many hours you recon this took you and how do you "polish" the frame or rather maintain the frame later when the metal starts to dull?

Could I also ask you to take a better res pic of your other Morewood to give an idea of how the metal wears without a clear coat over it please?

Are you a CT based rider or from up country?

Regards

Hairy

when I did my frame I found that once the paint was off giving it a uniform brushed look with a scourer took about 45 min holding a strip of scourer between two hands and 'buffing' it. If the frame is already done I reckon you could do it even quicker, perhaps 30 mintues to get it back up to good looking. From what I hear if you use car polish or similar you should not need to do this very often.

I might re-strip my clear painted frame because of the corrosion and re buff every now and again...it looked much better without the clear coat :)

Thanks, this is very useful feedback.

Ok... so hours to date (excluding stripping the components off the bike, but FYI that took 1.5hrs including removing the headset and the pivot bearings)

Currently I've spent approx 7hrs to get the frame to the state as per most recent pics.

The majority is done, I just need to get into the nooks & crannies... so I think another 2hrs and I'll be ready to decal up again and re-assemble.

As for the polishing/maintaining the frame... I actually don't know... I guess I'll monitor it and figure it out as and when it is needed. But I'm guessing a light once over with some steel wool will get it back to the brushed look. I will also try the polish/wax approach to see if that keeps it looking nice for longer.

As for my other morewood... that beast is somewhat older, and pre-powdercoating era. So that one has just had the paint stripped. No brushed look. no polish. Pretty much as "dull" as it can get. And funny enough, when I stripped the rear triangle of my new morewood (which wasn't powdercoated), it looked the same as the old morewood... So it seems that with time the bare finish doesn't degrade too much.... although my new morewood is going to pe sporting the semi-polished/brushed look... ao I can't speak for that (but I may apply the same look to the old one if it feels left out. 1hr with soem steel wool should do it easily).

Oh, and lastly... I'm an uplander... Jo'burg side
