You will not get a Spectra for under 8K.

Here are some approximate prices.

Scott Scale 60 – R10 399

Merida TFS 800 – R8 199

Merida TSF 1000 – R9 999

Silverback Spectra – R11 199

You might consider the Scott Scale 70. It will be around 8K and the frame is very up-gradable. The same frame is used on the Scale 40/50/60/70.

You will get less 10% on the Spectra and could possibly negotiate more.

The spectra is a really good looking bike! Its a pitty you had to let it go. I got myself a ventura, it's also freakin awsome! Heed I have no idea what it costs. The dude I bought my bike from was willing to give it to me for R8500 but he had it on special... P.s my ventura is XL and it wieghs 12.5kgs.

I recently helped a friend to buy a new bike, and we settled on a Ventura. Great bike, and great spec. It was R7500 at Gecko cycles, and included a tubeless conversion. That's pretty good value if you ask me. Cheaper than all the Merida and Scott options, and with better specs!

We have a Silverback (Ventura)in our stable and it is awesome. For the price the spec is amazing and she is very light.

Has over 1000km on it and it is yet to give a single hassle.

That is awsome! I got mine for 6500 but with the tubeless that deal is just as rad! I'm also very happy with my purchase!

+1 on the Spectra, Weight is something like 11.5kg's straight out of the box.

Nice wheelset, with red sealed hubs and decent groupset parts. Recon Gold is also not bad at all.

Best bang for buck IMO.

If you know how to maintain and service your bike properly, this bike will run like a dream.

If I had to start again from scratch and know what I know now, I would definitely get myself one of those, no questions asked.drool.gif

I see this mtb is lighter than the Scott aspect 10 and Scott scale 70 which weighs 12.70kg (these 2 mtb's are the last mtb's before the carbon mtb's of the scott range) and they go for at the same price range as the silverback spectra

I have currently a Silverback Phoenix and it is a good bike with deore components but the bike is quite heavy at 15kg's (extra's on bike is wired computer, aluminium bottle holder, silverback pump, and other grips with side handlebars.

how can I make it lighter?

Replace SHOCK and wheelset (NICE RUBBER cant hurt) is a easy way of shedding weight and something you realy can feel on a ride

Scott Scale 40 is the last before a carbon frame but it's the same frame as the 70. everything else differs.

thumbup1.gif On the the SB Phoenix.

Are you happy with the bike / decision?

Depends on the budget.

Options(3) :

1.Wheelset is probably the best idea as far as R/grams saved ratio.

2.Going tubeless will also help for overall performance, with a good wheelset also helping with handling and rotational acceleration.

3.Foldable tubeless ready tires is also an option but I would not recommend it , at this stage ( R/grams saved raio the best you will get )

It's also very easy to transfer the light wheelset to your next bike when you sell the SB with the original wheelset ( Which will still be newish).

A fork upgrade on that bike will end up being the most expensive component. Relative to the bike's price and components.

Upgrading the fork isn't the best R/grams saved ratio. Its more a handling upgrade opposed to a weight saving.

Taking new prices as an example : A Reba Race will cost you +- R4500 with weight saving of probably not more than 400grams( not sure about the weight of the fork), compared to the air fork on the SB. Ratio : R11.25 per grams saved.

If it's a coil fork that ratio must be re-avaluated. 2nd hand prices must also be evaluated.

With a wheelset you will easily get to 500 grams or more of weight saving with for instance a Ritchey WCS wheelset at R2800 @ 1560grams.

Ratio : R2800/500 = R5.60 / grams saved.

In other words on average upgrading the wheelset for weight saving purposes is almost half the price cheaper opposed to upgrading a fork for that purpose.
