I've been using Shimano SPD pedals on my mountain bike but I've had too many hassles with mud. Does anyone use Crank Bros Candy or Smarty pedals? How do they differ and how do they cope with mud? I'm not keen on Eggbeaters because I want a bit of a platform.

I've got Eggbeater SL's on my MTB & love them. 4 sided clip-in, brilliant, as is the mud shedding ability.

Even got them on my road bike. Wink

I believe there can be problems with the Candy platform fitting the base of the shoe. But are the Eggbeaters comfortable for all day, all mountain riding?

I have been using Eggbeaters fr the last 2.5 yrs and had no issues, just recently opened them and regreased bearings, a simple 5 minute task, needed it after wet muddy Karoo 2 Coast.

I have never had any hassles getting my feet out of them in a hurry and they are comfortable for all day riding.

Also not had mud and sand stuck in them, I have seen many riders around me not get their feet out of SPDs or in, because of mud on cleats & pedals.

Eggbeaters are Gr8

Hi Cranky

there shouldn't be a problem if you install the black plastic Shim between the Cleat and shoe. the shim is included with every set of pedals and also with new cleats.

I would suggest the Candy over the eggbeater for all mountain riding.

BUT the pedal that is most suited for this is the Crank Brothers ACID.

I moved from the Shimano pedals to Time and have never looked back. Have the SPD's on both road and MTB. slckrb2007-11-28 01:49:01

I don't like your Smarty pedals, so if you want, I would like you to

I had most of them, or rather, was able to use most of them.

From the titanium ones to the real cheepies.

Then after a few months i had to buy a set for the bike...

It happened at a bad month for me, where cash just would not flow. But i had to buy to be able to ride my bike.

The Xtr's sucked 1650 from my bank account.

There's something bout this stuff, i cant explain to you.

If you are able to use a set for 1 ride, you will know

Had the Candy C's for 2 years - no problems with them at all...

Just keep in mind one small thing, unlike the SPD's - you cannot adjust the spring tension of the release-mechanism on any egg-beaters...

You can however switch the cleat around, which changes the degree in angle before release to either 5 or 15 (?) degrees - but that's about it...

Never, ever had issues with mud.
