It's a full suspension bike, the rear triangle and shock have been taken off.

Same here. And believe you me, I have taken many a hard knock , only thing that broke was the front shock!! The Frame can take a beating.

Your dad or the mongoose? If your dad is getting on in years a hip or knee replacement might benefit him.

I still ride my early 90s Mongoose Iboc Team (steel frame)  but stay away from the Aluminum IBOC Teams with the triangular toptube. They have a tendency to break behind the headset. <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

All is irrelevant. It just takes one bad turn/fall/jump/crash to break a frame. Rather be thankful you have not broken your frame.
