What an adventure! My 4 week XC trip from east to west coasts has now been extended to 8 weeks. Dbn to Springbok completed, I decided to ride south to PE. Presently in Prince Alfred, tomorrow I head for Baviaans via Knysna.

And this is just the start! Early Nov. I will start a 3 month tour from Durban to Mombasa.

Secondary roads, 90% tar, using warmshowers and couchsurfing where available.

Exact route not confirmed but probably S.Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, (Burundi & Rwanda?), Kenya.

Anyone interested in joining me for all or part of the trip?

This is an interesting topic! I am also planning an unsupported tour (2 weeks). Am based in Gauteng as well. My idea is short distances, lots of exploring. (And geocaching)

I will be wanting another 3 or 4 people to join and am looking at August next year. I am not publishing my route / area yet until I have finalized my plans but if anyone is interested in joining, lemme know.

I will be interested in joining shorter (ie 2 day) tours if they on weekends / long weekends but only from January as I am still recovering from knee surgery.

Yep. I am doing a 2 week tour next year (well, about 9 days or so) in the Cape. If you need help with packs etc, I can help. Just been through all the pain of research. Go to www.cycletouring.co.za He has everything you will need and his service is amazing.

Feel free to contact me if you need help or want more info on my tour (would love more adventurers to join).

There's an awesome online magazine that was posted here a while back - you can download the pdf at www.bicycletraveler.nl

She basically pulls together travel articles and blogs from various sources - a great article on a Cape Town guy who rode through Africa in the 30s with his brother. And pictures that make you wonder what you're doing sitting here wasting time on the Hub when you could be cycling Outer Mongolia. Highly recommended.

Anyone know of a nice route for a 3day tour? I was thinking of heading to Mpumalanga from PTA. Maybe to Ezemvelo Nature reserve close to Bronkies or something like that. Just to get started with touring

How do you guys plan your trips? How do you know what is gravel roads and what are not? Google maps just shows a yellow line and that doesn’t tell me much. I want to do as much off road as possible

My buddy & I have never done an unsupported tour, so I think a short 3day/2night trip can be lekker. I am thinking of staying in B&B/self catering cause I don’t have a lot of gear yet.

Anyone done a short similar tour? Even if I have to travel, leave the car and cycle from there (NW, MP, FS). I just want ot get n feel for everything before my wife and I explore the EC on bike next year

What about heading South towards the freestate or even closer: cycle the magalies area?

I am interested to see this topic as I was thinking of finding a long weekend to do something similar. Or even do a 1-nighter.

A suggestion, how about a 4 to 5 day trip in the Eastern Freestate in the first week of December? I was thinking of starting in Frankfort (drive down and leave cars there)and doing a cirular loop around Heilbron, Steynsrus, Senekal, Ficksburg, Bethlehem, Reitz, Frankfort. That time of year we should be able to stay in guesthouses?

My tentative dates would be leaving thursday 8th December, cycling on 9th to 13th and returning on the day we finish. It looks like it will probably be mostly tar unless someone has a good gps that we can find alternatives?

PM me if you are keen to start planning.
