32GI

Hi

Breakfast - 2 pieces low GI bread, low sugar jam, and a banana. half hour before ride one scoop 32 GI as recommended.

First 2 hours of ride just sipped my water (which did have 32GI in it for the 2 hour dose), and had water at the watering points.

Then had the raisin bar/yoghurt bar at about two hours. Have been told you need to eat every hour, but I battle to eat on a ride for some reason.

Had the two hour in 32GI, but by then was already feeling knackered after one of the long climbs. Only thing different I had with me was some biltong, and I figured since I had started cramping already, the started wouldn't be too bad.

It was then like a yoyo for 55km. I've always forced GU's down previously but I never felt them give me a kick. That's why I was astounded when the enerjellies suddenly made me feel like a million bucks for about 10km. Then another helluva crash.

In the (distant) past I've trained six hours a day at another sport, so I know my body quite well, heart rate, etc. Just never had such a yoyo effect.

Could be quite a few things but that raisin yoghurt bar will definitely spike you, and dip rather quickly below the base, so probably not long after you took in that bar your levels collapsed you hit the high and low of the pendulum. Raisins are very high GI not good at all for an endurance event. A few people chew on biltong, I find it to be an irritant to the bowels remember if eating biltong its not doing anything for u, except a little salt, but the problem is that it takes time to digest, and the blood is sitting in the muscles, would be wary of this :-(.

Nish4 you sure its 32Gi you using it does not get sticky put it on your hands you will see its not like sugar at all. Also for a 3 hour ride you definitely dont need 2 bottles at all that's too much all the best m remember no such thing as a miracle product nutrition training and rest are key

Yep I that is way too much.

I rode last weekend for 4 hours with one bottle.

I had my morning serving (before going out) and then one bottle on the ride.

I actually tried something new and it worked ok for me.

I mixed two scoops into a jug and poured hot water over it so it dissolved. I then put that into a little bottle - like the hammer ones that people also use for their gu's.

I took that in in one big gulp. Tasted very sweet, but my body took it 100%. Try that with any other energy drink and you will be hurling.

So I recon for longer events where I may need a top up, but I can only find water along the route, then I will carry that in my back pocket and that will sort me out nicely.

Wow.

What alot of reading that I just caught up on.

How freaking funny was that posting the shower gel recipe for topwine!

He must definitely work for some other energy drink place or something.

Mark, you are doing some great work, and well done for sticking it out here.

I personally love this stuff and every single time I have something with sugar in it nowdays I feel so guilty because I am now breaking my low-gi diet and possibly compromising on my riding day performance slightly.

But so far, every ride with this stuff has been awesome. Im getting thirsty now just thinking about it.... yum.....

On that sugary note though. You mentioned that you are bringing out an unflavoured version?

How would that taste in breakfasts and tea etc? (compared to sugar for instance)

I am happy to use a bit of sweetner where needed, but my wife cant stand the stuff, so I give her fructose sometimes which is slightly better than normal sugar, but I suppose it will still spike you more than 32gi I recon.

What do you think?

This might be a repeat question: Any insights into using the product as a Type I diabetic (insulin dependent)? Any thoughts on administering (a little bit of) insulin during a ride in conjunction with the product (bearing in mind low GI and risk of hypo's)?

Flymango, we have had many diabetics using it and all have found that there was no need to inject insulin, try some and take some finger prick testing, think you will be pleasantly surprised at the stable blood sugar levels :-), this is the feedback and testing we have had, let me know, but so far the diabetics have been really satisfied.

I'm a type 1 Diabetic, and have been using this stuff for the past month. Works really well (did 100km on my MTB by myself last week, did 88km yesterday).

I do find however that my sugar levels goes TOO LOW. I've had a bad hypo yesterday at 60km (in the bundu's, with not a cafe for Coke in sight). I always carry jelly beans, and ate the whole pack, which got me home.

So on the one side, it is good, but be careful with your insulin: You might have to cut back a bit on the insulin to prevent a problem. I'm currently contemplating adding some sugar or maltodextrin to my GI32. Was not a good experience yesterday...

Yip is sure does say 32 GI, the bottle recomends 2 scoops for a full bottle, I prefer 1 1/2 as I find it too sweet. Once dried on the frame it becomes sticky and dust sticks to it. When carbo loading (as recomended on the container) I cannot get 2-3 bottles down a day as recommended, I feel bloated, as mentioned before. I am not slating your product, all I am saying is that it is not for me and I have given it a good go.

On the other hand my daughter loves the stuff and it has helped her with her various (top level) sports.

Sorry to hear about your hypo (never good, and means nothing left in the tank), but seems like your glycogen stores are fine based on the long distances you ride. I'll probably have to try this product, whilst taking care to administer a lower basal and/or less bolus. I find my glycogen tank is only so many kcal's - after that I need careful and immdediate glucose replenishment and sometimes insulin if ingesting high GI carbs.

Not a problem Nish, to be honest I only carbo on 2 bottles a day its more than sufficient for me, remember what you eat with the carbo loading can add to the fullness. Anyway, on the amount there are some people well a handful that find it sweet, so we are releasing a neutral flavour which will take the sweetness away totally if desired will let u know when this comes out.

For all of you some of the people using our product, tend to not be able to really distinguish between hydration and energy needs. I had a guy the other day who took a 3 liter camel back on a 2 hour ride, the interesting thing is yes he drank all 3 litres in 2 hours. However from an energy point of view he only needed 2 scoops (1 serving of 32Gi), however he was under the impression he needed 2 scoops per every 500ml and that basically left him with 2 x 6 = 12 scoops, = Total Overload on the stuff, in actual fact I would say stomach irritation for sure its equivalent to about 12 gels in a 2 hour ride, that must have hurt.

Its important that u cater for energy requirements when using any energy product, not to confuse it with hydration requirements. With 32Gi, 2 scoops see me for 3 hours, I dont need any more, on a pre-training meal, its even more suited to 3-3.5 hours of exercise. No need to exceed the recommended dose. If you take in the drink before remember it is still providing u with a few hours sustained energy, so if you are only doing a 2-3 hour ride, then in that case I would only take water.

Personally I dont like to pre-load I find I am too full, so I start drinking it 20 minutes before, just to get a little into the system and then use through the session.

Hope this helps

all the best

@Diabetics,

Guys any feedback will be greatly appreciated, we are working closely with the diabetic community. Before during and after session we have had a lot of the diabetics finger prick testing and giving us the feedback.

So this is what we have seen:

1. Blood sugar rise is not high at all, but it is kept stable for a long period of time.

2. Diabetics that were using insulin with sugar based products, never needed to shoot with 32Gi, in actual fact there was no need at all. Shooting actually caused 1 of our customers to go hypoglycemic, but the next session he went 3 hours without any need and felt great.

Let us know how it goes, we are thinking of providing a little sachet to add a slightly higher GI effect to the drink should u want it later on, will keep u posted on this though.

all the best
