I'm headed to CPT next weekend for a wedding and wanted to practice my sea-swimming. We don't get much of it in Gauteng :P

So where do you Capetonians get your swim on? Is there a safe beach somewhere where I can avoid getting chowed by a shark or washed out in a heavy current.

False Bay is warmer and the waves are usually smaller than the Atlantic side. Fish Hoek is ideal for swim training, unfortunately the sharks dig it too. Otherwise you could head to Camps Bay side, but you will freeze your tits off.

Bring a wetsuit and rather stick to the western coast side - the local friendly predator in False Bay sure loves a foreign happie ;)

+1. Even though I do not practice what I preach (I swim in the pool and waterfront canals)

Rather freeze your b@lls off then get chowed by a grey suit. CLifton if the sea is not too rough or Granger Bay at the Oceana Power Boat club (look out for the boats!). THis is also the venue for the Challenge CT swim.

Which canals are you talking about? Isn't that like swimming in the harbour, wading through diesel slicks?

also make sure not to go spear-fishing before you attempt your swim - that's how the one guy at Fish Hoek went after he had hooked his catch onto his belt..... tsk tsk tsk

For excellent resistance training head to fish hoek and tether an old wetsuit stuffed with pilchards to your waist. Use a long rope.

  a VERY long rope!

Anywhere where I'll see other distance swimmers? Preferably not those being nibbled on. Where do you guys train? Are there groups?

Silvermine dam?

Personally I don't surf or swim in the sea any more. Too nippy these days.
