Squeeling Tandem brakes

So I spent hours making sure that the brakes on my newly built tandem were set properly or so I thought ...

We live on a hill so with the boss on the back we set off for the second ride - the first with everything "nicely set up". Within 25 meters she wants off cause "this thing is embarrassing".  The reason for her embarrassment is the same as my sons on the club tandem - squeeling brakes.

I thought that maybe the club tandem just was never set up properly. So my answer is don't worry the brakes just need a bit to bed in. Nope ...

Down Chappies, through Camps Bay we let off loud, tortured screeching sounds every time I touched the brakes.

The upside is that you get the attention of the person who is causing you to brake. Wink

Any ideas? They are the standard cantilever brakes.

Toe the pads in a little so that the front part of the pad makes contact a fraction before the rest of the pad. Think of a match stick amount of toe.

And obviously, replace pads if old.

If all that doesn't work, a sure-fire way to get the squeak away is to Q20 your rims, but you might do away with your braking all together! So not really advised. Wink

The choice of pads are also important. We used cartridge type pads made by BBB. They also make a multi compound pad that we used. It worked quite well.

Use a cable ties as a spacer.  Insert the tip of a cable tie into both brake pads. Hold the brakehandles in place with a rubber band cut from an old tube. Loossen the retaining nuts of the brake pads lightly. Now tighten the retaining nuts again and viola!!!! both pads are aligned the same.
