GLuvsMtb Posted March 16, 2012 Share First innings average = 50.94. 97 innings with 2 not outsSecond innings average = 47.71. 76 innings with 11 not outs. It is by implication much more difficult to get a not out in the first innings as an opening batsman as you would typically have to bat right through at least 2 days to set a decent score. Both of these were batting second with scores of 2 and 30 respectively. The score of 30 not out was against Australia in the 3rd test in Sydney (Jan 09) where Smith retired hurt. The score of 2 not out was later in the same season in Durban, also retired hurt. I also presumed that Smith is more of a second innings specialist, but the stats suggest otherwise. DJ84 Posted March 16, 2012 Share I understand that his average is lower in the sceond innings,but factor in the difficulties of it and it is to be thought that he is a better second innings batsmen than most. Where did you get those stats?It would be interesting to compare him to an opposing opening batsman such as Cook (No.5 in rankings) and see the differences between 1st innings and 2nd innings.
