And Fatboy throws away his wicket again !

I suppose you're not happy about his performance in the previous match either. Give the guy a break.

I have to say that fatboy is a "second innings" specialist. Would be interesting to see how many runs he has scored in his second vs first innings in the past 2 years?

Given the form that he's in at the moment.... I'm guessing 10 vs 20?

Really enjoying The Phalaborwa Express delivering his lightning rods.

What a bowler.

Intriguing test match.

C'mon Proteas!!!

Mexican wave to Vernon - on his way to the fastest 50th wicket in SA Test history.

Relentless threat, with or without his chewing gum!

Interesting to see how people actually think peoples performances are.

Smiths Ave in test

2010 53.94

2011 40

2012 61.33

Over the whole period 50.93,

I would say thats not bad for the 9th best ranked batsman in the world.

Would also love to know the difference between f 1st and 2nd innings averages Garfield.

Posted

First innings average = 50.94. 97 innings with 2 not outs

Second innings average = 47.71. 76 innings with 11 not outs.

It is by implication much more difficult to get a not out in the first innings as an opening batsman as you would typically have to bat right through at least 2 days to set a decent score. Both of these were batting second with scores of 2 and 30 respectively. The score of 30 not out was against Australia in the 3rd test in Sydney (Jan 09) where Smith retired hurt.

The score of 2 not out was later in the same season in Durban, also retired hurt.

I also presumed that Smith is more of a second innings specialist, but the stats suggest otherwise. Love him or hat him, I'd rather have him play for us than playing against us.

Oh yes. For a "fat man" to only have been run out twice in his carreer spanning over 97 tests suggests that he is not as slow as we all think.

NO, it says that he doesn't attempt to run between the wickets anymore... thats why his scores stay low

I understand that his average is lower in the sceond innings,

but factor in the difficulties of it and it is to be thought that he is a better second innings batsmen than most.

Where did you get those stats?

It would be interesting to compare him to an opposing opening batsman such as Cook (No.5 in rankings) and see the differences between 1st innings and 2nd innings.
