Less than six months after retiring from international cricket, former South Africa captain Graeme Smith has already picked up a pair of other jobs. Unlike many of his team-mates, who chose coaching or commentary as careers after cricket, Smith has opted to climb the corporate ladder and is officially an employee of financial services company Momentum, who sponsor South Africa's ODI and women's team.

This is in addition to Smith signing as tournament director of South Africa's 20-over domestic competition , a position he accepted last month.

His first project for his new bosses will be as a patron for the M2E bursary scheme, a joint venture between Momentum and CSA that provides for the financial and educational needs of talented cricketers from seventh grade upwards. Candidates are identified according to academic results, on-field skills and monetary backgrounds and those selected have their school fees, text books, stationery and other costs paid for.

  • 2 weeks later...

He was detested by most of the South African public and side-eyed by many in England. He has, however, admitted that he was just a bowler when he came to England (a rather average spin bowler, at that) and some of his comments about his native country were out of line.

In his book he writes: "One big mistake was not respecting South Africa and what it stands for. Not respecting South Africa and what the country gave me in terms of living there for 19 happy years... I realise too that South Africa was my first home and my real home."

This is in reference to being named ODI Player of the Year in 2005 when Mark Nicholas said he would be "coming home" for a one-day series in South Africa. Pietersen responded that he was simply going back to SA, not home. As is his wont in South African relations, it ruffled quite a few feathers.

At the time I thought that this would come back to bite him in the balls. If he wasn't so arrogant at the time he may have found himself a decent contract at a local franchise for a year or 2 after parting ways with England and who knows, maybe even a coaching position later on. Now no-one will touch him in SA or England.

sjoe, I really think this is the genuine spirit within the current squad. My dad always said a star team beats a team of stars. Could be something special coming from these guys.

This is a bit of a middle finger to all the current England changing room saga too, ha ha.

so we're a few months out from a world cup and the squad is getting pencilled together.

what chance this guy makes a late late charge?

Andrew Puttick

he's played a single ODI, almost 10 years ago where he made a duck.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/223335.html

He lived in a time when Graeme Smith owned the opening slot, but has been consistently at the top of the yearly run tables and played quite a bit for SA A- now has over 15 000 domestic runs across all formats.

he's on a bit of a hot streak with 89*, 101 and 94 in the momentum one day cup.  There was a shrtload of runs elsewhere over the weekend - http://www.espncricinfo.com/momentum-one-day-cup-2014-15/engine/match/736201.html - 367 unbroken opening stand, and they almost still lost.

Another that seems to get better with age is McKensie. There will always be the one or 2 that never quite cracked the nod for international cricket. Puttick would have been a good call as he can do duty as a backup keeper too, but with both AB and QdK in the side it seems like he will have to be content to play franchise cricket until he calls it a day.

meanwhile the WI tour was cut short due to a pay dispute between the players and WICB. BCCI is now considering a damages claim in excess of $65 million. Lets hope this does not affect the WI schedule later this year in SA or that they end up sending a second string side. We could do with some stiff competition from a passionate and talented group of West Indies players before the ICC world cup next year.
