Abbott is a right hander...if you want left armer then you play dice with whatever Parnell rocks up on the day.

problem with Abbott is he didn't really perform in home series when given the opportunity. could go either way really, but vern might get in on marginally better batting

Yikes

I'm a left-hander though.

Vern is proven to be quite an all-rounder. Not quite, but getting there.

His batting powers will be a competitive edge indeed.

I can't believe that we're in a world cup in australia with 3 pace bowlers in the attack. Maybe blame drop in pitches for some of that, but in '92 we played omar henry in only one game and big mac/hansie did the fifth bowler duties.

6th Match: South Africa v Kenya at Potchefstroom - Feb 12, 2003

Kenya 140 (38/50 ov); South Africa 142/0 (21.2/50 ov)

South Africa won by 10 wickets (with 172 balls remaining)

we've been waiting 4 years for this boet

SA vs Kenya. Not exactly a scary prospect. They were co-hosts, of sorts, along with Zim. But it was like a bit of charity allowing them to play some games at home and a few other odd low-key match ups. Mainly to allow visiting supporters to go see the Masai Mara and Vic Falls between games(ICC likes to s p r e a d their tournament out).

hersh klaps it.

Sort of backfired, both politically and results wise. But not in this game. They won the toss, the crowd groaned as they chose to bat. Blasted out for 140..wickets spread around, but Klusener mopped up the tail. We coasted to the total T20 style, Gibbs and Kirsey getting there – mainly due to Gibbs who scored 70% of the runs.

another MotM trophy, just put it up there with the rest

Another world cup MotM for Zulu.

The only other really memorable thing on this match was that it was Jonty’s last ever one day international (his 33 year old ass got dropped next game, didn’t even bat in this one)

15th Match: South Africa v New Zealand at Johannesburg - Feb 16, 2003

South Africa 306/6 (50/50 ov); New Zealand 229/1 (36.5/39 ov, target: 226)

New Zealand won by 9 wickets (with 13 balls remaining) (D/L method)

Scorecard | Commentary | Article index (3) | Photo index (22)

Back on the winning trail, next up was New Zealand. Also not really that scary a prospect. They had beaten the windies, but dropped their opening game to SLanka.

boj shows his BMT with the bat (got moered with ball too)..that would be a young Brendon mccullum with the gloves.

hersh got floored chasing quick singles

We bat first and post a monster total of 306. In the 42 round robin games (excluding where Namibia and Netherlands are bowling) there was only one other 300 plus score (Aus 310/8 v Pakistan). For this day and age it was game over. Innings was built around HH Gibbs, but looking back at the scorecard now you just have to wonder what sort of stuff they smoked in team meetings those days.  So they drop Jonty, but put Boje in at 3. Gary Kirsten comes in at 8 in the end, boeta dippenaar doesn’t even bat. Klusener comes in with 6 overs to go and joins Gibbs who has just started blasting. His 33 off 21 helps towards the 100 runs that came off the last 10 overs.

this is not going well

Should be plenty. Unfortunately we run into a captain from down under about to play the ‘innings of his career’. Just like Steve Waugh in 1999, Steve Fleming takes the game away from us. Wonder if FNB can spot the pattern?

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/story/126719.html - innings of a lifetime

It rained three times. But the pitch must have been really flat for them to have been going at that rate to only have concede 1 wicket. They were on course for the score. Pollock and Ntini were tidy but the rest got a pasting, none more so than AD who went for almost 9 an over. One really has to wonder if he's the guy for a bowling coach at a world cup (employ him for the other 46 months of a 4 year cycle no problems)

32nd Match: South Africa v Canada at East London - Feb 27, 2003

South Africa 254/8 (50/50 ov); Canada 136/5 (50/50 ov)

biff gets fifty

Canada provided the opportunity to bounce back from a heavy defeat. They were pushovers in the end but it was hardly a confidence inspiring performance. Debutant Ashish Patel rattled our top order with his freakishly scary medium pacers. We were 23/3 before Boeta and Biff got together and chose to grind out a decent partnership. Wickets tumbled around Boeta, we only passed the 200 mark in the 46th over and eventually it was down to Pollie, Andrew Hall and Makhaya (14 off 6) to get 50 off the last 5 overs.

home town match for makhaya!

kallis falls to patel

Canada had come off an upset win over Bangladesh, and Jon Davison moered the Windies for a then record 67 ball century. But these guys were part timers, and it was no surprise that we got them 2/8 after 6 overs in the chase.  What was a bit worrying was that they chose at this moment to show the ICC that they could hack it at test cricket. They got to 136/5 when the umpires closed the innings at 50 overs. They even managed to face 10 overs from the once scary Allan Donald without conceding a wicket.

makhaya on fhaya

Boeta got a man of the match award for going at 4 an over, mainly because everyone else was more crap.

Maybe bring QDK in at number 5 or 6 and put RR to open...

Warner is looking good for a double hundred here. More that enough time for him to get it.

*gotta love the commentary on cricinfo*

Shapoor Zadran to Warner, OUT, there won't be a triple hundred today. At least one undesirable record avoided by Afghanistan. This is bowled cross-seam, which is possibly why it has come slower on to him. Warner gets under, goes on a knee, and wants to hit a massive six. Just gets too much under it, and sends it miles into the air. It has hit a meteor or something and has come back for Nabi to take a really difficult catch at mid-on. He goes reverse cup and just about holds on to it with the ball not landing sweetly in the palms

All QdK needs is a big score in the next 2 games and all will be well with SA fans. Perhaps he should just be a little more intelligent when constructing an innings. He got out 3 times being caught in front of square (2 from short balls and one good length ball driven to mid-off). Only 1 dismissal was behind square to second slip. His feet are moving well and he seems to time the ball well. He just need to be patient and wait for the bad ball. Perhaps he should let # take a bit more of the strike. Run a few down to 3rd man and get his eye in before cutting loose. The best solution for QdK is to spend time in the middle. He will not do that batting at 7.

I agree with you, he has been batting stupidly, trying to go out too hard too soon.

Where's the oke that batted against Pakistan, that said, maybe he should open against them ;)
