I have only been riding since January and have limited it to MTB.

I am now toying with dipping my toe into the road.

I've looked around and have a budget of R25K max. Absolute max.

Should I look to buy a bike or would it be better/more cost effective/more fun to build a bike?

Buy what you can get pre-built. It is definitely the cheapest way to go.

BUT, if you can get a good deal on parts, then by all means, go buy each specific part as you like it.

I am building my own bike with the parts I have already bought. I have the wheels already from my current bike but all in all it has cost me R12K excl wheels and saddle (which I also have). Might look into getting a new saddle sometime soon, but for now, it's just the bike build.

At the end of the day it is more rewarding building a bike but it's more expensive....sometimes.

There are some very good deals in the classifieds on wheels and group sets.
