We have Shimano XT V Brakes with pulley attenuators on our Tandem. They are sfficient. We are a 190 kg team. Not sure if your frame can take V Brakes?

Discs.

You will only be able to use cable actuated disks. There are no hydraulics in STI, Campy and Sram levers. If you go disks be sure to get a proper Tandem rated front fork with a steel steerer. There has been documented cases of forks with disks failing on Tandem.

Thanks eccentric1. we are about the same weight as you guys. frame has V brakes on at the moment but would like to go disk at the rear then. and then looks like the shimano XT will go on the front.

I have V brakes on the tandem (~160kg), but not happy with the stopping power at all. Are there special brake pads for a tandem? Will try replacing them as a first effort.

Ok, so back on this...

had the Tandem serviced and the tektro V-brakes..... well for want of a better word are SH*T!!!!!! the from squeals SO loud it hurts your ears and the rear does not stop us... you can pull the lever as hard as you like, best case is it slows you down.... they are also binding at the rear.... so i want out!!!!

so i can get my hands on a set of XTR V brakes like the Xt M750's.... will it be worth it or should i try get the front XTR V brake with pully wheel? and the rear to disc???

new Hub,

spokes

rotor

disc brake calliper, BB7??

new cable.

wheel build?

anything i'm leaving out??

I have spotted a Trek tandem road bike here in the Cape with disc brakes. Looks the shizniz! Just dunno what you would need to upgrade. Stopping power looked fine to me.

A disk brake will not give you any better braking performance other than the rim heating up and popping a rear tube. My opinion is that you are going to waste your money.

We have Avid Arch Rival V-brakes on our Ralegh Tandem. Wickedly awesome VBrakes. They do not make them anymore. Might be worth your while to search around to see if you can find a set. Tektro is crap on a Tandem. The XT brakes are lso very good. We have a set on the other Tandem. Both are fitted with modulators that assists to boost braking effort. We use BBB brake pads. The dual compound kind. Squeeling will oocur if the pads are not set up correctly. I insert a buiness card in the front of the brake pad to ensure the taper is set up correctly.
