Hey there, any advise on the correct MTB wheel size for my daughter, she is 8 years old and stands 115 cm tall. Looking to spend not more than about R1800.00 if i can get away with it. Any advise on make or LBS in Gauteng?

Avalanche Cosmic is pretty much OK.\, it has grip shifters (easier for small hands)

I upgraded the brake levers for my son (to Avid v-brake, the adjustable ones)

I paid about R1600. Good value.

Enjoy

Thanks, is it any good? that is it's not a PnP special!

It's not. Avalanche is brought in by Dragon, who do Giant. I bought my kids the Giant MTX250s, and they were similarly specced to the Cosmics, but more expensive.

Like, johannrissink, eventually I put triggers on, but that's not a biggie to start with.

I bought my daughter the 20inch Avalanche Max when she was 7. She is now 9 (going on 10) and the 20inch is too small for her.

If your daughter is 8, I would not go the 20inch route as she will outgrow it pretty quick, go for the 24inch even if it may be slightly too bike now.

The Max is pretty much the same as the Cosmic in terms of spec and I think it is one of the better kid's bikes out there.

I also bought the Giant MTX250 for my daughter when she was 9. She's now 11 and so far it has been a great bike. I modified the wheels to quick release and taught her how to fix a puncture. She regularly rides in the 10km MTB races while I ride in the longer ones.

Thanks guys, just went to Linden Cycles to have a look and got a Titan Contessa 24". I think it will be great for her as her first "geared" bike, and should last. Quite a looker and the spec is not too bad. Cheers

Linden gave me a bit off, R 2056.00 odd. There was a cable disk one, but got girls specific one with the V-Brake. I'm a little concerned about small fingers in rotors. High 4 and all.
