Garfield2010 Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 This is just to get an idea if the wetsuit issue is a really an issue and how many guys it does influence, as we have all been wondering. Personally I dont enter certain races due to this - but that is just me. If I swim 2km or further for example, I need my wetsuit and that is the end of that. I can swim 5km in the pool so it is not an issue in terms of fitness.
Garfield2010 Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 what if it's really warm water? Then you probably already know wetsuits won't be allowed. This is to test if the wetsuit issue actually influences the amount of guys entering a race.
Seeker911 Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 I was wondering when you were going to get round to doing this. Looking forward to seeing what this looks like end of today.

So if you swim 5k in da pool (presumably without a wetsuit), why do you need the wetsuit for a triathlon swim > 2k assuming water temps are not to cold?
gummibear Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Will you turn down a Kona slot if you were to qualify just because you can't wear a wetsuit?
Garfield2010 Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 Thanks for the poll Garf. So if you swim 5k in da pool (presumably without a wetsuit), why do you need the wetsuit for a triathlon swim > 2k assuming water temps are not to cold? Well I feel safer among other things. If I wear my wetsuit and get tired, I can swim very slow and rest and still be comfortable. If I swim this slow without the Wetsuit then I sink! Its almost like shoes. I have trial run shoes and road shoes. I can wear my trial shoes if I run short distances up to 5km. Once I go over that my knees become sore so I wear the long distance running shoes...... probably a stupid comparison If I spend more than 40 minutes in the water I prefer my WS - warm water or not!
Garfield2010 Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 Will you turn down a Kona slot if you were to qualify just because you can't wear a wetsuit? No I wont. But Kona is different. Have you seen how clean and clear that water is??!! Kona is not Germiston Lake !!!!!
gummibear Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 No I wont. But Kona is different. Have you seen how clean and clear that water is??!! Kona is not Germiston Lake !!!!! Why is it different? It's still water and can get very murky just like a dam.It can get very very choppy unlike the dam.
SwissVan Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Oh ja ok so its the fear of drowning, I'd be more worried about sharks and those huge barbel found in some gauteng dams n rivers
gummibear Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Have you seen how clean and clear that water is??!! So your fear is of what lurks beneath you and not the swim itself
Garfield2010 Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 Why is it different? It's still water and can get very murky just like a dam.It can get very very choppy unlike the dam. I am not here to argue the issue - have done that on plenty of other posts, the idea is to see how many guys it actually influence in terms of actually entering an event.
Garfield2010 Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 Oh ja ok so its the fear of drowning Yep something like that. If you cramp or get a heart attack you will sink and drown without a wetsuit. With the suit on at least you have a chance!
SwissVan Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Yep something like that. If you cramp or get a heart attack you will sink and drown without a wetsuit. With the suit on at least you have a chance! Dude if you have a heart attack in the middle of a tri swim your jorked with or without a wetsuit.
Garfield2010 Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 The point is that if there are a considerable amount of guys who doesn't enter events because of the legality of the suits then perhaps it is worth it to investigate accomodating them. It is all up to the organisers of course. Maybe they can have a different wave that starts last and these competitors are "disqualified" for all practical purposes but are allowed to race with suits etc. Anyways, it is something we can discuss depending on the poll results. If it is only a few guys then it wont make any difference...........
Garfield2010 Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 Dude if you have a heart attack in the middle of a tri swim your jorked with or without a wetsuit. Well if the life saver sees you floating lifeless he can pull you out and at least try something? Remember what happened at midmar last year?
