New here.... Just arrived from Europe where there's interest in self-supported MTB routes in the high hills. I'm used to doing 1 to 3 day solo routes in the Alps and Scottish mountains (about 800 to 1100m).

Can anyone advise me on where I get maps at about 1:50 000 scale?

Does anyone do this stuff here? Langeberg, Hottentot Hollands, Cederberg all look good to me, but maybe I'm not seeing the objective risks.

Any help welcome.

There used to be a place in Mowbray that supplied 1:50 000 topographical maps. Think its the Surveyor Generals office.

Perhaps one of the CT adventure racers could be of more help.

ja it's still there, van der sterr gebou, rhodes avenue, mowbray.

It really depends what you want to do. a lot of the exciting type pioneer travel requires some land access and pre planning - provincial roads can get a bit boring but you just jump on them and go. you can't go wrong with this plan.

get the slingbsy map of the cederberg http://www.slingsbymaps.com/cederberg.aspx

make some sort of rough plan, phone ahead to places to stay. you might even be able to get some places to stock some supplies for you if they're going to town before you arrive.

get to clanwilliam and ride.

ps. it's the hottest time of the year. vuurwarm!
