Advise on Triathlon's ( Gear, training, ect)

Good day All,

 

Well I hope you guys have a blessed 2012.

 

I have decided that I want to take up triathlon up as a sport. I've been very fascinated with it for years now.

 

So if you guys can give me any tips on taking the 3 discipline sport on, I will really appreciate it.

Get someone to help you swim propperly - swiming is 75% technique

 

Do brick sessions : bike/run - right after each other to get the body use to them

 

Enjoy the first one - after the second you will be hooked.

 

Top tip I ever heard - "Just remember, we still have to run after this"

I am doing the Xterra lite in a few weeks and have to agree with Vinny, I swam around 600m yesterday and said to my friend that if I like the tri's and decide to carry on then I will maybe go and have some swimming lessons to make it easier and less tiring.

Very good free training programmes on www.beginnertriathlete.com

 

I worked my way up from the sprint to 1/2 Iron distance in a year

 

Dont get swept up in the gear frenzy.

 

IMO basics are:

 

silicone cap

goggles

tri short/jammer

cycling shoes

helmet

bike

good running shoes

 

remember "no one ever says; lets play triathlon"

Another thing that I'm contemplation is, should i buy a new bike or a second hand?

 

Something that't been playing on my mind, don't want to spend thousands on a bike and than I don't have any interest after a while.?

Hi Xander,

 

I'd suggest if you are a rookie, go 2nd hand 1st.

A new bike can set you back quite a bit.

You're also going to make all your rookie mistakes on your 1st bike - so better to have something you're not too sorry for.

When you start training and you build up knowledge about groupsets and saddles and such you will eventually know exactly what you want in a bike and then when you spend a lot of cash you get exactly what you are looking for.

 

Go out and have fun!

Always a tough decision. Borrow a mate's bike to train a bit and do a sprint tri is first place.

 

Better value for (less) money in secondhand market.

 

Buy a new (cheapish) bike and you like tri - you would like to upgrade quite early (remember the rule - don't get pulled into the tech stuff they have at tri's. It can be depressing seeing all the bike porn and compression gear there!)

Buy a new (cheapisn) bike and you don't like tri's nor cycling - you'll lose 40% of its value.

Probably your biggest worry as far as equipment is concerned is getting the correct running shoes. Chose wisely and spend wisely on this item.

 

I have seen many athletes on an old skadonk bicycle passing those on the latest technology - be patient when looking for a bike many secondhand ones are more than good enough to do the job - remember you don't buy a bicycle because of its resale value.

 

Tri bike or normal road bike - practicality states a normal road bike if you can only afford 1 bike - there is also no significant aerodynamic advantage in riding a tri bike unless you use a tri helmet and can maintain a speed of over 25km/ph - Clip on tri bars also work well on your road bike

 

Goggles and cap available from Mr Price Sport for under R100

 

Wetsuit - a entry level ORCA will more than suffice about R1600 for an S3

Start with the short ones, and a Olympic distance, for two seasons, then try 1/2 irm, then a year after that only tackle IM. With those big ones, you dn't wanna sit in transition 2, thinking"Oh my God, what did I get muyself into?" Its too late then.

Cervelo, you are making me worry. I only started during sept last year, have done 2 sprints and I entered 70.3. Hopefully I dont feel like that at T2.

If you completed 2 sprints easily and you are well prepared you'll be fine!

Don't hammer the bike and if you're feeling good when you start the run - HOLD BACK wink.png

Okay thanks for all the advise, really helping me.

 

Now with the running, any good brands I should be looking out for?

 

Also any other gear that I should look out for when it comes to the running?

 

Also, when it comes to a time watch, what do you suggest?
