Pop some melatonin before you ride. Hey presto, you are riding in L1 and must break a sweat just to stay awake.

and if you fall asleep in the middle of the road?

There-in lies the challenge. The OP is complaining about the onset of boredom - solution : raise the stakes but keep the intensity at recovery level.

Go ride around the neighborhood with lots of stop streets. Listen to chilled out music, practise your no-hands riding, practise trackstands. Take a dog with you if possible.

try classical music, for example:

for riding in L2 i would recommend something light, like bach's cantata, air, the soft bits from st mathews passion (stay away from any of his organ music and fugues)

for riding in L3 mozart and beethoven are your friends, you know, 5th or 9th symphony, marriage of figaro, etc.

then for high-octane anaerobic stuff - hit the rachmaninov!!!

enjoy

I'm not sure about which one is better for recovery - but I hardly do any chilled out riding - so I like a recovery ride and a nice coffee stop just to get my mojo back and enjoy cycling again
