Accident occurred close from home

Tony Martin was only three kilometres away from home at the end of his training ride when he was hit by a car earlier this week. The Omega Pharma-QuickStep rider doesn't know exactly what happened, but he ended up in hospital with “the left half of my face totally smashed.”

He has so far been diagnosed with a fractured cheekbone, jaw and eye socket. “My left eye is bloodshot and swollen completely shut,” he wrote on his personal website. “My left arm hurts and a few ribs are involved, too.”

As is so often the case, he doesn't remember the crash itself, noting that he was unconscious “for about 15 minutes. All I know is that I was going about 35 to 40 km/h on a slightly descending bike path when probably a woman in a car crossed the path. Then the lights went out.”

He was taken to the local hospital, where he stayed overnight before being transferred to the University Clinic in Zürich. “Here are the necessary specialists, who can put me back together again.”

He would still rather be at home, though. “Actually I am doing quite well. My girlfriend is taking care of me here. My mother and brother have arrived from Frankfurt. I am being taken care of in the best way.”

Martin summed up by adding that he was only three kilometres away from home. “Actually I had the day as good as finished. Bothersome, but it can happen any time and anywhere.”

I heard Switzlerland has some of the safest roads in the world when it comes to cycling, lots of respect shown to cyclists, is this true ?

Yes, pedistrians are king followed by cyclists and then public busses.

That's why i said its shocking to see how many people are killed or injured on bicycles involved in accidents with vechiles.

Obvisiouly the fact that so many people use bicycles for daily transport increases the number of incidents, but it's still very high imo....when i get a chance i'll see if i can find the official stats, for sure the swissies have every single one recorded and documented

Land of the OCD.

I really should move there.

OCD? Oversized Chocolate Delights

Try claim political assylum, they tend to have a soft heart for refuges trying to escape wicked regimes or military service...otherwise its pretty difficult to get into unless you can get a job...and people with Africa on / in their passports are way down the list when it comes to handing out work permits....

The trick is to enter the country illegaly first, cause then its harder for them to chuck you out...

Foreigners seeking protection in Switzerland can request asylum with any diplomatic representative or Swiss consulate, at any one of the country’s borders or at any Swiss airport. However, almost 90% of asylum-seekers sidestep the risk of being denied entry by a diplomatic representative or at the border – they enter Swiss territory illegally and go directly to one of the four FOR Reception Centers located in Chiasso, Basle, Geneva and Kreuzlingen.

Still on topic....Kreuzlingen is where Tony Martin lives.....

“I am happy that the fractures won’t need surgery. I’m at home now. For me it’s really important. The day of the accident I was thinking, ‘Why has this happened to me?’ But now I have to say I was lucky, it could have been much worse.”

It is uncertain when Martin will be back in racing.
