Spare a thought for Jaco Lubbe and some of the other staff of Induna Adventures injured in an accident while building the track for the race.

Jaco underwent surgery yesterday. Notwithstanding the hiccup, it appears that the rest of the team is pulling out all the stops to once again put on another well organised event.

Speedy recovery Jaco.

Cycling Tip #3

When to sit or stand on a climb

Sit: Approach hill in middle ring, select a gear that maintains 70 to 80 rpm cadence. Hydrate at the bottom

Shift early while seated: If running out of gears in middle ring, shift early to granny while spinning moderate cadence, apply light pedal pressure

Assume the cosmic crunch: Move up on nose of the saddle, crouch down over handlebar, head forward and elbows low. Keep rear wheel churning, move upper body forward to keep front wheel down

Stand: On long, consistent grades, it’s helpful to stand to relieve pressure of the back and relax legs by shifting the load to another muscle group. Select the taller cog before standing.

Remain seated: Continue eyeing straight up hill for firmest packed and smoothest route. Steer around soft terrain and overly difficult sections. Relax and use gears to sustain healthy pedal tempo

Definitely stand: If you enter into a roller or moderate grade in big ring at speed. rise out of saddle, sprint and use speed to bring you up the rise. Back off the pedal pressure or sit before making chain ring shifts.

Cycling Tip #4

Corners

Low - Speed Turns

1. Keep a loose grip on the handlebars. Begin breaking before you hit the control.

2. Try to find the smoothest way around by focusing as far ahead as possible

3. Take caution on wet trails because it may be slippery

4. Shift down one gear before leaving the corner

High - Speed Turns

1. Try to slow down before entering the corner

2. Take as wide of a turn as possible. Remember to keep your outside leg extended

3. Aim for the center of the apex, keep all of your weight on your outside leg to prevent skidding

4. Do not pull your brakes because this will cause you to lose control. Lean into the corner

5. Once you make it out of the corner, stand up and pedal hard

Who is up for this one? My first long ride after Sani2c and really looking forward to it. Maybe too much recovery  I guess I'll know when I watch the Boks whip the English later that afternoon.
