Ask Christoph Sauser...he'll tell you the diffrence.

That's what you might call a subjective opinion - I am sure there is a lot more to it than what Suzzie has to say, although his opinion should be respected.

What the manager of Scott Swisspower (Nino et al) has been saying during World Cup XC's on Red Bull TV, is that the advantage of the bigger wheels play out on rougher, flatter terrain. Also perhaps the bigger wheels suit the taller guys. Yesterday in Belgium he said that perhaps the smaller wheels had an advantage on that course. (26" 1st, 650b Second)

I am not entering into a debate with you about which bike is better, because it will defeat the OP's post completely, and will make both of us look like fools. He simply wanted stats on performance, and I pointed him towards Sauser's comparison.

Help!

I am 1.64cm tall, lady and am looking at getting a new bike. Some say 26 and some say 29. I enjoy cross country and the classics and marathon racing. Some say get a 29er hard tail? I want a nice light bike now so weight does play a role, any ideas suggestions, brands you can recommend??

Thanks!

Take a 26" HT and DS out for a spin at your lbs

then do the same with a 29er HT .

You will get the feel that suites you

That i will do! I ride a 26 softail at the moment, weighs 12.9, GT Marathon. Love technical riding. have looked at the Volcan FS01 and ridden (very nice 10kg) and am looking at the BMC too. Have been told the Merida is a nice option too, never ridden on one though. Such a tough one but agree i must ride the 29er to decide!

My wife is a bit taller than you and has tried my 29'er but gone back to the 26'er. She says the 29er requires too much power on climbs and is difficult for her to control on the downhills ... her quote "feels like I have to work really hard to get it to go where it should". She's a weekend warrior, not a pro.

Ride both if possible, but be aware that they are very different beasts and you may have to adjust your riding style.

FWIW: I tried two 29HT before buying a 29ST .... don't believe anyone who tells you that a 29HT rides like a 29ST .... thats only true on the tar or very good gravel.

I previously had a Merida 26 dual suspension which was ok but I decided to go the 29er route and ended up buying the Scott expert carbon dual suspension.I have ridden it twice now, including in last Saturday's Tsitsikamma race and found it BRILLIANT to ride.

I am by no means a good cyclist but due to spinal fusions I need a comfortable ride and found the new bike really good.I had no problem on the technical sections and definately climbed better.

I am not suggesting everyone should go this route but thought I would just share my personal experience. As suggested in earlier posts,it might be better to try both out as you don't want to regret your purchase when it is too late.

Your budget will obviously play a role as well.

Good luck

Was thinking of going the 29 route but the money I would lose on my 26 er would be way to much, probably got R57 000 in the bike would be lucky to get R27 000 for it. Just checked my Pina can take 27.5 wheels just need to swap my SID with my wifes Fox and I'm good to go. Waiting for stock on the American classic, so I will let you guys know how things go.
