I'a looking at a strong, lightweight XC wheelset for Lefty 29'er.

I see that the Mavic SLR 29er will be launched in couple of months.

And other option I was thinking of was the ZTR Crest with Hope II pro Hubs or dtswiss 240s.

Will both these sets be durable enough for marathon / stage races?

Any experience / opinions on these wheelsets? Or maybe any other durable / lightweight lefty wheelsets that you can recommend?

is Mavic high maintenance, and how is the support on these wheelsets when something do go wrong?

Do what Kosmonooit does. Hope hub rear, project 321 (I think that's the name) and lace them to a decent set of hoops. Should last a long time...

Can you use the hope or dt Swiss hubs up front with the lefty? Can't you only use the cannonade hubs? Got hand built wheels around those crests and taken some pretty massive drops way out of their warrantee range and they're still perfectly true. Boring hub choices though toxic, the hopes are the loudest most obnoxious and unfortunately ubiquitous hubs and the dt Swiss hardly have very good actuation. If you're building up your own set try something unique. I've got the super beautiful and rare hand made white industries titanium hubs and on my race set the slightly more boring but bench mark setting chris king hubs. Buy them from CRC and you'll have a bargain.

I was worried about that at first and I was going to go for the heavier Arch rims for training, but in my expience they really have held up on a lot of big jumps including the downhill track and avalanche at mankele and fort klapperkop. I do tend to run quite a high tire pressure (2.2 and 2.1 I'm 67kg) to prevent rim damage so I'm not so sure how well they hold up at lower pressures but they do seat nice fatty tires like the hans dampf to have that extra volume security and grip. Weight wise in that price range they can't really be beat, and I was expecting to have a strength pay off but there's been none of that.

...I'm 67kg...

That's where our experiences will differ tremendously :) I haven't been that weight since std 7! I'll generally go for stuff that's stronger over weight but only because I'm heavier and I'd rather avoid the hassle of having to true wheels, and I'm nowhere near the front of the peloton.

Edit: although if you're going to save weight anywhere, the wheels are it. Rest of the bike not nearly as important.

That's exactly what I had.

Hope Pro2 rear hub

Project321 front lefty hub

Velocity Blunt rims

DT Swiss spokes

Awesome wheelset!

Thanks caad4 for the ref - yes I have built up two lefty wheels sets albiet 26"

I used ZTR Crest rims and Swiss Revolution spokes for the Scalpel. and ZTR Flow and Swiss Competition for the Prophet AM (the slightly thicker spokes)

I must add that them skinny Revolution spokes are tricky to true, but I am sure a pro wheel builder who does it every day will have the technique sussed.

Last time I got ZTR rims local option was good via Buycycle (I think), and CRC was cheaper than from Stans direct because of crazy shipping they now charge. Got the spokes and Hope hubs from CRC as well.

I got the Project 321 hubs from them direct. They also have a better hub system than the 'dale one.

I was looking at the Chris king hubs on CRC, but no stock, so the next best option (I thought) was the DT Swiss 240s.

I also didn't even knew about the project 321 hubs. They do look awesome.

Will investigate some more.

Easton EC90 and omnico swops out the front hub to a lefty hub(also in nice bling red) for free

Awesome. I was looking at the Easton wheels, but thought that the fact there was not a lefty option. it would not be worth it.

Will re-look at this option. Did you buy the wheels from Omnico?

Are you happy with the carbon wheelset? I was thinking about the EA90...
