MTB service in Johannesburg area

What's the best bike shop for a full MTB service, in the Johannesburg area? Each time I try a new shop and each time I'm not happy with something when I get my bike back, so I'm looking for a shop that can service reliably and get my bike into perfect shape for the sani2c.

Cranky, Colin and Kirk at Morningside Cycles are the best at MTB for sure. They will more than likely be there at the race to service your bike. Check with them though.

KF, i love the peeps here - they all seem to be great and the company seems to treat staff right Big%20smile i do admit that i'm a little (ok, VERY) underworked at the moment but i think that will be changing BIG TIME next week when we've moved to the Woodmead offices and the 2008 working year kicks off properly.... i can't wait!

Depends where about you are in JHB.

JHB is quite big. If on the west the try Westrand Cycles.

Okay, a bit off topic but still inline. I see in the overseas magazine the bike shops pride themself that their mechanics are "qualified" and "certified". Why don't we have that kind of stuff. I see that Pro Cycles advertise that they have an ex Barloworld team mechanic. Is this something to look out for?

Well, had the worst possible service from FPC in Paulshof, so dont go there.

Tony Impey cycles in Bedford Centre did a great job with my Road Bike so will most likely take my MTB there next. Or Morningside - sounds good too

I've tried a number of the LBS listed in this post and have had varying service levels - I think they give better service to people with more expensive bikes!

One LBS I've been impressed with has been Dunkeld Cycles.

BTW - Why is it that when one has new tires fitted as part of a service the old ones are never returned unless you ask for them?  I recently changed to tubeless tires on my MTB and the original tires that were on the bike were not returned (they only had done about 150 km) - I was in a rush to pick up the bike and only realised this about two days later.

I've also had one bad service at FPC and one good one (but on my old hardtail) at Tony Impey (who is a bit pricey). I want to swop my Crossmark tires to something better for mud for sni2c, so will remember to ask for the Crossmarks back after the service!

Cranky, you will not get the perfect MTB Shop.

Its humans that working on your bike.

But what put them apart is "How they handle a issue"

When you take it in for a service, test ride it afterwards and find a fault or something you dont like:

When you takes it back and they do not take responsibillity but tells you "Did you play around with gear settings, Did you knock the back deraileer, etc"

its time to move on.

If they fix it without made you think its your fault or caused by you, stay with them. Next time they will be more aware that you do come back and service will improve.

and if they can't fix it, be aware that they might just tell you it's because you've got a crap bike.

Hey Cranky...

Convert here. I've been told Linden is the best for MTB's for many years. They pride themselves on their MTB expertise more than anything else.
