Hey guys

Last month i borrowed my friends bike, a trek 1200 (shamona set) and took it to lectures, it got stolen outside my venue. I therefore have to replace it.

the bike was in a relative good condition, the brakes where a bit worn. he claims he bought it second hand for R6000.

please can someone advise me on a fair cash settlement i can pay him, its coming between our friendship.

Thanks alot

having said that. work out how much that friendship is worth to you. chances are he wont be happy with a 3k settlement if he claims he paid 6k

also try get more information in terms of what actual components were on it. there is a big difference between sora/tiagra and ultegra

FIRST

Ask your friend what components were on the bike. Cos thats the first thing a bike shop will ask is what components and what wheels it had (things that get upgraded first)

Ive seen a few of those Treks going for 2K to 3K. they are very common.

SECONDLY

Go to a local bike shop in stellies and ask them what the market related value of the bike is/was.

I know there is Flandria cycles by Pick n Pay, Mason's close to the Dros ( in that alley way where stones and all stars was) and BMT in morkel street.

A bit over ten years ago i had my bike stolen in stellies, a friend was using it and next thing it was gone. it was partially my fault as the lock wasn't as bulletproof as it should have been, but hey. He agreed to pay for a similar bike, found one in capeads and that was it. I got a solid ubolt lock and never another issue. The gumtree link below should help for sure.

for maties specific stuff, the beserings dienste used to punch an id number into your frame, to help track stolen bikes.see if that was done, and if the okes know anything about that.

also these bikes are(were) often stolen by the same (underage) tsotsis. they get caught and there's a garage full of them. go to the police station and look in the impounded section.

am i now a bike snob for sniggering at the 'serious buyers only' tagline?!

i still wonder why people post a question and never come back online to check the replies.
