Hi

I got suckered into entering a hefty mtb event by a "friend" thinking "how hard can it be?" and started training last weekend.

Well 4hrs round Suikerbosrand later, I reckon its bloody hard.

I've done a lot on the road but have had a rude awakening spending time on my "Clunky Piece of ****" (CPS).

So please, for starters, what is a good saddle to be going with & approx price? I got a Merida 60 or something and am riding the saddle it came with.

Have you done a 4hr ride on the mountain bike before?

Hi .... I've been mountain biking for 2 years now, so I am not a "new" newby but I still don't know every-thing. Firstly: Suikebosrand on a mountain bike is tough on any-ones bum. I have searched and searched for a correct saddle and the only shop that went the distance as far as sitting me down on a "bum-o-meter" was Solomons Cucles in Woodmead .... do that, before you go and spend allot for some-thing that is not for you.

Dangerous to ask for advise on something as personal as a saddle on here. Most guys will post what works for THEM which will only end up confusing you. If your road saddle works for you then get one for your MTB as well.

But from your post I take it this is the first time you've that much time and k's on the bike. Yes? If so chances are any saddle will have the same effect. My saddle is my best friend and when riding a lot I drop my chamois and ride with baggies / sport undies without a problem. 2/3 weeks off the bike and I wouldn't dare leaving the house for a ride without a chamois again. Your ass will toughen up, but it takes time. Just make sure your bike's been set-up properly and that you spend lots of time in the saddle.

If you still have issues go for a measurement BEFORE you start spending money. You may hit jackpot and find the perfect saddle for you with your first purchase or you could go the expensive route and only stumble across it with your third or fourth attempt.
