But it could have cost less as a 26er?

All second hand goods and I built her up with a small budget, that was first going to be a 26'er SS build .... look around as there are often great deals out there.

This whole 29'ers are so expensive argument is becoming less and less applicable over time.

See that 26 and 29 inch wheelsize mentioned. Presume then that mountain bike frames are used. Can an old road frame be converted to SS? What would be needed to do the conversion? What gear ratio would be good on rolling to hilly terrain? SS sounds like fun and I am interested to get into the game :thumbup:

I am moving from a 26er to a 29er and read earlier in this thread that if my 26er was a 32-16 the 29er should be 32-18.

Why?

Maybe even a 32-20t pending your terrain and legs / fitness.

Larger wheels to turn over requires a slightly lighter gearing.

Taking the gear ratio calculator on http://sheldonbrown.com/gears and calculating speed for any chosen cadence for the various ratios on the two wheel sizes gives the following:

26er (@ 90 cadence)

32X14 = 25.6 KM/H

32x16 = 22.4km/h

32x18 = 19.9 km/h

29er (@ 90 cadence)

32x14 = 28.6 km/h

32x16 = 25 km/h

32x18 = 22.2 km/h

Only a 0.2 km/h difference between a 32x16 on a 26" and a 32x18 on a 29"

Happy gear hunting!
