It seems that there are a lot of people out there who buy brand new bikes, don't ride them at all, and then feel the need to sell them.

I do understand this may happen on occasion due to unforeseen circumstances but I find it quite interesting that every second advert now claims that the bike has done less than 100km. I'd get it if they claim they have found they just don't ride much and are giving up the sport but often we'll be told that they are selling to upgrade to something better. Surely 100km is hardly sufficient time to realise you want something "better"?

It's weekend warriors who buy a brand new 45k spez and next weekend when he gets to thetrails the others has 29 ers so he sells to fit the fad.

You get a lot of bargains this way so I'm not complaining.

Ha ha, I hear you.

I wouldn't complain either if they were all bargains but most of these folk seem to think they can sell the bike for the same price as a new bike, because the bike has "only done 800m to the shop and back".

I have, perhaps nastily, taken to posting the original brand new price that I find online on some of the adverts. My view is, as with a car, once that bike "drives off the showroom floor" it loses value. People who pay exhorbitant prices for these second hand bikes are ruining it for the rest of us and leading to inflated second hand prices.

It's the classifieds version of second hand car salesmen telling you that:

1. It had only one woman owner

2. It belonged to an old lady who only drove it to church

3. It belonged to a doctor

4. It is from upcountry (i.e. not a coastal rustbucket)

5. It was never in an accident

6. It was serviced and maintained regardless of cost (when no service books available)

7. It had a full major service last week.

Hey, that one is often thrown in for good measure... which I always find a little strange for a bike that has only done 100km :)

@ Clint ....What if they used a GARMIN edge and can show you the bike milage on STRAVA?

Could never to that on a phone gps...LOL

This scenario can work out to ones favour if the person selling the bike is :

a. A family member's

b. A good friend who tried but failed at sports

c. Someone who won a bike.

Well you could if you felt Strava was your ride repository of choice. I could of course show them my Sportstracker, Endomondo, Runkeeper etc etc etc profiles if they so desired. BUT being a phone user I am obviously smart enough to realise that they needn't have recorded every ride anyway..... ;)
